Handing out candy for Halloween is believed to be a tradition rooted in medieval times, when the poor would beg for food at every door on All Hallow’s Eve. Families would give them “soul cakes”, a type of bread with currants, in exchange for prayers for their dead relatives. The first mention of children dressing up in Halloween costumes and asking for candy in exchange for singing was in a publication in Ontario, Canada, dating back to 1911. No matter its roots, trick-or-treating is a great Halloween tradition for kids, as well as for adults. Just seeing all those cute, and sometimes creepy, faces smiling up at you holding their bags out can lift your spirits, unless you’re the Halloween version of Scrooge. Of course you’re not, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a spot of fun too. Halloween isn’t only for children, and you too can have fun dressing up in one of your favourite Halloween costumes. Why not surprise all the children this year and hand out candy as a princess or a witch, or anything your heart desires? You can decorate your yard as well, and create an entire fantasy for all the trick-or-treaters who will be coming to knock on your door. It will definitely guarantee you will be their first stop next year. Some ideas to decorate your yard beyond the ever-present pumpkins include nylon inflatable figures, garden scarecrows which you can make yourself, and even using some old bed sheets to make ghosts. There are also specialty stores where you can get monsters that are truly gruesome, with fake blood and everything. If you do take the path of goriness, then don’t be surprised if everyone will be avoiding your house next Halloween. On a more serious note though, the sheer volume of candy given out to children on Halloween can actually be more frightening than any ghost, vampire or ghoul. Besides the fact that taking in so many calories is not healthy for children, candy is full of many other ingredients which may be even more harmful than sugar. It’s very difficult to believe that an ingredient whose name you cannot pronounce, and sounds like a chemical formula, can possibly be good for anyone, let alone sensitive children’s tummies. So, be the one to start a new trend and instead of filling those trick-or-treating bags with sweets and chocolates, maybe you should consider some other options because they will receive mountains of candy anyway. There are a lot of token items you can get that are inexpensive, which the kids will love probably a lot more than the candy. Some things you can give out include pony tail holders and shiny hair clips for girls, temporary body tattoos and mini cars for boys, pencils, small canisters of play dough, bookmarks, key chains, sports cards and so much more. All you have to do is use your imagination a little bit and the sky’s the limit.
