The world’s premium coffees are mostly categorized by their geographic origin. For example is the Kenyan AA coffee or Sumatran coffee. Unfortunately, this is not always the case with the term “peaberry” as it is not a geographic identifier for coffee. In other words, the naming of a coffee as a “peaberry” is due to the type of the coffee bean itself. The coffee cherry or fruit that forms on a coffee plant naturally contains a bean that forms two halves. These beans are usually flat on one side. If there is only one out of the two beans that fertilized, the coffee cherry will then contains only a single bean. This single bean is round or oval with shape similar to a pea. Thus, this individually formed coffee bean is called a “peaberry” or less often as a “caracoli”. Through estimation, five percent of most coffee beans are known to be peaberries. In order to qualify as high grade Arabica coffees, peaberries have to be separated from the regular “flat” coffee beans. A “peaberry” coffee should only contain peaberry beans. Peaberry beans are believed to provide an excellent taste in comparison to regular beans due to the process in roasting. It is said that the oval shape of the peaberries enable them to roll easily in the roasting chamber ensuring that all the beans are evenly roasted. Another arguable statement is that the bean has its own flavor that makes the Peaberry coffee superior among the others. The single bean is smaller in size and denser resulting in a more robust and acidic flavor than normal Arabica coffee beans. There are also other opinions that the superiority of the beans has come from a rigid selection process where the regular beans are separated away from the peaberries. Peaberry coffee is also appointed by its geographic origin. This is such as one of the most famous peaberry coffees is the Tanzanian Peaberry. For your information, expensive coffees such as Kona and Jamaica Blue Mountain too come in a variety of peaberries. Hence, the very next time you buy a single origin coffee, you may want to consider a peaberry variety as another option. You then can taste the distinctness between that two.
