My life has come a long way and have experienced all the sorts of things. For the most part it's live and learn. One experience is living with and without insurance. Sure I have been without off and on depending on our financial position but mostly was in favor of having it. So far I have been fortunate to not seriously need it. But now with a family of four kids for me it is a priority, and here is why. Imagine this, at forty eight years of age I decided that I needed to spread my wings, lighten up, get my groove on? Some may have called it a middle age crises, whatever it was my wife was ready to concede to let me do what ever I wanted. That whatever I wanted was a bike, the kind with a motor. I was riding all over the place on weekends, getting a wiff of the great outdoors and spending some alone time. I even made new friends. It was with some of those new friends that it all went from great to bad. On a Saturday morning as usual for the last month or so we set out for a 200 mile track to a near by city with great county back roads perfect for motorcycling. It was on one of those roads that I was trying to catch up with the group (they had a tendency to speed), as the road came to a curve it narrowed and there was on coming traffic. I could not make it. I am not sure what hurt worse my fall or when they contacted my family. I was was busted up good, completely unconscious and required an emergency helicopter for transport to the nearest trauma center that was even further from home. I spent a week in a coma, some broken bones and a fractured scull. Two more weeks for recovery gave me a total stay in the trauma center of 25 days. Once home I needed several visits to specialist, lots of medication and one more year of therapy. Even though its been a few years I still am not completely recovered but am getting on with my life. I am telling you this to inform you of the importance of haveing good health insurance. In the small amount of time of two years I accumulated a $225,000.00 tab. Our health insurance plan had a high deductible and out of pocket was $5000.00 that we were able to make monthly payments. The balance was covered by my Health Insurance company! At any other given time I may not had been covered. Having good health insurance will totally save your butt if you get seriously hurt. Even having individual health insurance with a high deductible is a smart idea.
