Packing And Moving Fragile Items With Less Damage

Home Improvement
Planning on moving but unsure of how to carefully get your antique vase or glassware from one home to another? Here is how to perfectly and securely pack fragile objects to prevent damage while moving.

1. Choose your materials carefully When moving with valuable and fragile items, it's important to be a bit picky about what packing materials you'll use. Sure, bulk cardboard boxes and duct tape might be suitable for your towels and shoes, but that heirloom vase will require something a bit sturdier and more reliable. If you're going with cardboard, be sure the box is sturdy and the right size, you don't want to have to force the item in or have too much space so that it's banging around during it. You'll also want to buy sturdy tape and carefully construct the box, ensuring that the seal keeping it together is tight. Double or triple tape and tape the inside seams as well. Don't over pack or you'll risk the bottom of the box falling open during it.

2. Wrap the item carefully The most common packing material used to help cushion fragile items, whether glass, metal, or otherwise, is bubble wrap. There are many different kinds ranging from the large bubbled variety to smaller ones. There isn't too much of a difference between large and small bubbles, except that larger are more suited for transferring smaller, delicate items like glassware, whereas small bubbles can handle greater weight more efficiently (they're also more fun to pop!). The smooth side of the wrap should be touching the item while the bubbles face the outside.

Extra bubble wrap can be used to fill in space around the object once inside the box to help prevent too much shifting, so save any spare scraps you might have after cutting as they will come in handy.

Packing peanuts (small foam cushions) are another common packing material used during moving. These make better filler and should not be relied on to prevent scratching or other damage to a fragile object. They also can be messy and cling to items, so use these sparingly if necessary.

3. Double wrap Once you've carefully taped and secured some bubble wrap around the object, it's time to construct another small cardboard holder for it to ensure as little jostling during moving as possible. Purchase some extra boxes or some thin cardboard sheets, Place the object on top and cut the board to fit so it can be wrapped firmly around it. If it is odd shaped, you may need to cut extra board to cover different areas of the item. Secure the cardboard in place tightly around the object with a few layers of tape. The item can now be placed in a box (preferably alone or with just a few other similar sized pieces) and then any remaining room should be filled with bubble wrap, packing peanuts, or old newspaper or cloth.

In Philadelphia Moving can be made easy by hiring a professional mover to pack or move valuable items. Make sure that they have insurance and ask about their techniques before handing over your important, fragile belongings. To know more visit, http://www.angieslist.com/angieslist/
