Despite the fact that clown costumes are quite popular for Halloween, people often overlook the main purpose of a clown. It isn’t to look intimidating or to make balloon animals but to be funny, which is not as easy as it sounds. Being funny is not a science and there are no checklists one can follow for effective clowning, and thus many clowns fail becoming scary rather than hilarious, as they should be. If a person is not true to themselves there is no way they can pull off a successful clown character. If you are not humorous by nature or your type of humor doesn’t fit in with a loud, boisterous clown then you will have little chance of making anyone laugh. The sad thing is that more and more people don clown costumes without actually being able to make people laugh and they only rely on balloon animals, which they believe makes them the perfect clown. However, clowning is a true art form and it can take many years for a clown to perfect the art of making audiences laugh. You also need to remember that makeup is important but it shouldn’t be limited to the huge grin most people wearing clown costumes opt for. In truth, a good clown has to be able to show off their expressions and makeup should be used to enhance the features so that their expressions can be seen well. A clown is, in fact, an entertainer with much more creative freedom as he or she is responsible for every aspect from their gags to their wardrobe. However, the problem is that a clown is there to entertain others and not to play pranks on others for his or her own enjoyment. Herein lays the difference between a true clown and clowning around. A great clown loves people and loves to make them laugh. That often requires a lot of self-discipline which is why not everyone can be a great clown or even a passable clown. Just because they put on clown costumes doesn’t make them the perfect comedian. Good clowns are usually seen visiting hospitals because they are people who love to make others happy and there have been many cases when a clown could reach a person who would not respond to anyone else. That’s because great clowns love to make people feel better about themselves. So, now that you understand the true art of clowning you can decide whether clown costumes are right for your or not. If you prefer to play pranks on others and goof around for our own enjoyment then maybe clown costumes aren’t exactly right for you. However, if you love to make others laugh and don’t consider it a blow to your pride, then maybe you have truly found a calling.
