Ladybug costumes are a great option for Halloween, especially for children. There’s nothing quite as cute as dressing up a toddler or a baby in a cute ladybug costume. However, ladybugs also have a deeper symbolism than merely being cute insects. Ladybug Costumes and Good Fortune The ladybug is considered to be a talisman of good luck and prosperity. It is said that if you wear a ladybug talisman or if a ladybug lands on you your day will be much brighter and you will have more patience in general. It is also supposed to lessen your burdens. What better way to take advantage of this role of the ladybug than by wearing ladybug costumes with every occasion you can? There are many options to choose from and whether you wear the costume for luck or merely to be cute, you would essentially be killing two birds with one stone. In fact, it is believed that if a ladybug lands on you while you are ill, the ladybug will heal you by taking away your sickness when it flies away. It is also believed that if a ladybug alights on your hand and then takes flight, the following Sunday will be a lovely, sunny day. Ladybug Costumes and Old Wives’ Tales There are some beliefs whereby if a ladybug alights on the hand of a woman who has recently wed, the number of spots on the ladybug is equivalent to the number of children she will have. So, if you are recently married, make sure you count the spots on all the ladybug costumes lest you end up with a football team. Another story claims that the number of spots on a ladybug represents the number of happy months that are in your future. This can be rather confusing because on the one hand you don’t want 12 children but it would be lovely to have 12 happy months, so if you believe in any of these tales you might want to think your decision through before choosing one of the ladybug costumes. There are also tales that claim if you catch a ladybug in your home the number of spots it has equals the number of dollars you will find. Doesn’t that just make you wish they had a couple of thousand spots? But remember that it’s bad luck to kill a ladybug so don’t catch it and then kill it or you will negate any good luck. According to Asian folklore, if you catch and release a ladybug, this tiny insect will fly straight to your true love and whisper your name in their ear and he or she will quickly find you. Since you won’t be flying because ladybug costumes won’t actually turn you into one, your only other option is to start searching for a ladybug if you haven’t yet found your true love. In Ireland, the ladybug is seen as a protector but this is mostly due to the fact that they naturally control aphid populations that would otherwise destroy entire harvests. In conclusion, if you have had a bad year you might consider one of the various ladybug costumes for this year to turn your luck around. On the other hand, even if you have had a great year, why not make sure everything continues in the right direction with a little help from a ladybug?
