Belmont wagering will be still be intriguing as mounts go a mile and a half for the first time in their careers, even though the Belmont will not have a Triple Crown at stake. Belmont probabilities favor Ice Box but with a mile and a half length, anything may happen. Belmont wagering will not contain Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver or Preakness winner Lookin at Lucky. There are supposed to be 11 mounts though that will go to the post on Saturday. Many trainers don't choose to race their mounts at this length, since the Belmont is a grueling contest. Mounts that take the Belmont usually don't take their following contest. Actually, in the past decade, only three times has a horse secured the Belmont and then secured his next contest. Summer Bird did it a year ago, Birdstone in 2004 and Point Given did it in 2001. Belmont probabilities on Saturday will be the 4th time in the past 50 years and the 3rd time since 2000 that neither the Derby winner nor the Preakness winner will be in the contest. There was a Triple Crown at stake a couple of years ago but Big Brown was a flop in the Belmont. Four years ago it was Jazil winning in Belmont probabilities in a contest that did not contain the Derby winner Barbaro or the Preakness winner Bernardini. There are a lot of unknown mounts in this year's Belmont wagering lineup. Although it seems more likely that Ice Box, First Dude or Fly Down will triumph, one of them might actually make their mark. That doesn't mean that mounts like Game On Dude, Make Music for Me, Spangled Star and Drosselmeyer won't get some action on the gaming board. History has demonstrated that many things can happen in the Belmont, which is a tough contest. When you consider the length of a mile and a half in the Belmont you don't have a great deal to go on. The mounts in the field have never raced this far and they will probably never race this far again. Whether a horse can make the distance is all up in the air. Pedigree is a factor but it is still up in the air as to how a horse will handle the mile and a half. The Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes are the three races that encompass the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing. Based at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, the Kentucky Derby is one and a quarter miles in length. The Preakness Stakes is raced over one and 3/16ths of a mile at the Pimlico Contest Course in Baltimore, Maryland. The last leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, is held at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. The Triple Crown is for three-year-old thoroughbred horses, and winning all three of these races is regarded the biggest achievement a thoroughbred can ever accomplish. Even so, no horse in the United States has won the Triple Crown since 1978, when Affirmed won it.
