Colorado is a beautiful state. From the Rocky Mountains to the plains to the east, there is a bit of something for everyone and this makes the state a favorite of outdoor enthusiasts. The state has always been environmentally conscious in many ways, but now it is really incorporating that leaning into conduct. What is the big move? The state has adopted a tough renewable energy standard. It requires that 30 percent of all the energy in the state come from renewable platforms by 2030. Of this amount, three percent must be from solar energy platforms. The federal government is often mocked for its lack of action on energy issues. Ironically, the lack of action at the federal level is almost becoming irrelevant. This is because states are picking up the ball and running with it. Colorado is now one of 29 states that have renewable energy production mandates of this type. That being said, Colorado’s 30 percent level is very high, placing it only behind California and its 33 percent standard. So, what is behind all of this effort to go green? Well, one could certainly argue it is the smart move from an environmental aspect, but I have to admit I am a bit cynical for that these days when it comes to politics. The truth is, as always, economic. Most politicians in these states view the move to green technology as a way to generate new business in the form of renewable energy companies. This, of course, translates into more jobs in the state as well. Given the small unemployment problem we have in this country, that’s just a small need these days! The exact reason for the passage of these bills is not particularly important. What is vital is the simple fact we are seeing a steady move away from fossil fuel reliance to a cleaner energy platform. Will it happen quickly? No, but one has to start somewhere and the production of at least 30 percent of the energy needs in Colorado from green energy is another step in the right direction.
