Trust me, if anyone knows what it's like to constantly do battle with curly hair, it's me. I've been on a serious quest to find just the right style and level of manageability since I was in sixth grade. That means I have over a decade of experience experimenting with products, pins, and coifs. If you want to transform your frayed tresses into the luscious locks gracing magazine covers, I can help. Listen up and lean in closer. I am about to share with you my best-kept secrets. Prepare yourself--I'm about to scold you. STOP USING OVER-THE-COUNTER, MEDIOCRE PRODUCTS! Curly hair has special needs, and even the ones that claim they are formulated for curly hair will be no help to you. Many of them contain harmful or at least troublesome ingredients like wax. I kid you not. You may have to try a few curly hair products until you find one that works best for you, and even then you may have to make some adjustments until the results are just right, but the number one thing to go for is adequate hydration. Curly hair is by nature dry, which is often what causes the frizz and flyaways. Your bathroom cupboard needs to contain a few essentials. First of all, you will need a high-quality leave-in conditioner for everyday use. Skip the gels and hairsprays, as most of them contain alcohol, which dries the hair. If you need body and hold, try a texturing cream or a lightweight curl definer. You will also want to make sure that you have a root lifter (usually available in a spray), as volume can be very sexy with loose curls or with styling. Don't forget the shine serum or spray. Many formulas tend to tame the frizz while also giving curls a lustrous look, which is so important for hair that tends to be dry most of the time. Bobby pins can become your best friends. The "haphazard pinup," as I call it, can be a classy and easy 'do. Gather either just the top layers of your hair or all of your curls and bundle them on top of your hair until you have just the right look. This can take a few tries, but remember, with plenty of pins, you can make necessary adjustments. Make the style look piece-y and that will add a whole new layer of glam to your style. Pull a few strands loose. You can even define them with a small-barreled curling iron if you like. These will add some classic elegance. The first time I tried this look, several classmates asked if I was going to a ball. People were remarking on my hair all day long. Even now, I am complimented by friends and strangers alike.
