It has an exceptional wide aperture of f/2.8 to produce rapid shutter speeds for those quick insects. It also generates a nice blurred background, the goal of a respectable close-up image. The USM (ultra sonic motor) delivers quick focus, again, nailing the bug shots with a very good "keeper" rate.
