Fancy Goldfish is one of the oldest fish, which has been kept for the ornamental purpose. They are adaptable to moderate temperatures. They survive between a minimum of ten degrees to a maximum of twenty-five degrees of Celsius. They have been a part of Chinese tradition for thousands of years. In ancient china ordinary people were prohibited from keeping yellow ones as yellow was the royal colour. Now-a-days they are available in colours such as silver, grey, red, orange and yellow. During medieval period in Europe these goldfish were used as a gift. Men used to gift it to their women on their marriage anniversaries for their prosperous life together. They are quite hardy and can be kept in garden ponds where the temperature doesn’t drop too low. Selective breeding has resulted in many colours for the species. Some of the common domestic goldfish available today are Black moor, panda moor, bubble eye, cornet, fantail and lionhead. Also ryukin, telescope eye, ranchu, veiltail, oranda pearlscale, pompom, celestial eye and butterfly tail. A single goldfish has been recorded measuring up to nineteen inches in size which is the maximum till date. These fish are mostly pond fish. As long as their remains enough oxygen in the pond and the water doesn’t freeze they do not face any problem. They are colourful, inexpensive and hardy by nature. During winter they stop eating and lay at the bottom of the pond. One important thing for their survival is to keep the pond clean as they produce a large amount of waste in their faeces and through their gills. They also produce a large quantity of chemical waste which when not filtered becomes fatal to their survival. Plants are the best tool for filtering this waste as they generate enough oxygen for their survival. Their diet consists mainly of proteins and less of carbohydrates. They can be given peas, branched-leafy vegetables and bloodworms as their food. An addition of brine shrimp can be beneficial. Overfeeding can be fatal as they result in blocking of intestine. They have high social learning skills as well as strong associative learning qualities. They distinguish between different human individuals through their visual acuity and sound vibrations. They possess a memory span of three months which helps them distinguishing various sounds, colours and different shapes. They can be trained to react and recognize different colours of lights and sounds. A well filtered aquarium with more than hundred litres of size can be used to keep them for domestic purpose. Twenty-five percent of the water should be changed twice a week to keep the environment safe for the fish. Small plants should be added along with fine grain sands for the purification purpose. These small steps can keep these colourful creatures more vibrant and increase their life, which in turn adds more joy to your life.
