During winter they stop eating and lay at the bottom of the pond. One important thing for their survival is to keep the pond clean as they produce a large amount of waste in their faeces and through their gills. They also produce a large quantity of chemical waste which when not filtered becomes fatal to their survival. Plants are the best tool for filtering this waste as they generate enough oxygen for their survival. Their diet consists mainly of proteins and less of carbohydrates. They can be given peas, branched-leafy vegetables and bloodworms as their food. An addition of brine shrimp can be beneficial. Overfeeding can be fatal as they result in blocking of intestine. They have high social learning skills as well as strong associative learning qualities. They distinguish between different human individuals through their visual acuity and sound vibrations. They possess a memory span of three months which helps them distinguishing various sounds, colours and different shapes. They can be trained to react and recognize different colours of lights and sounds. A well filtered aquarium with more than hundred litres of size can be used to keep them for domestic purpose. Twenty-five percent of the water should be changed twice a week to keep the environment safe for the fish. Small plants should be added along with fine grain sands for the purification purpose.
