Taking care of your wood furniture is easier than you probably think! Putting into practice simple preventative measures drastically cuts down on wood care. Whether you just bought a new piece of wood furniture or have inherited an heirloom, taking proper care of your furniture can help preserve these beautiful pieces for generations more to come. Go defensive! When arranging your furniture, place the wood pieces away from areas of direct sunlight and away from air vents. Consider investing in window shades you can open and close depending on the sun's location in order to better protect the wood. Keep the room's temperature and humidity consistent. Varying humidity can warp the wood due to the expanding and contracting of the furniture. Run a dehumidifier during the summer to pull water out of the air, and consider investing in a humidifier during the winter months. Do not directly set heat or water on the furniture. Place hot pads underneath warm dishes when setting them out on the table. Provide coasters around the rooms in order that people can easily see where to set their drinks down. You can pick coasters which match the d?cor of your room, adding a creative decorative touch-coasters don't have to be tacky cork rounds, sticking out like a sore thumb. Regular dusting keeps the wood looking clean and prevents the buildup of harmful grit and grime which naturally collects. Dust with a clean, soft cloth coated with a dusting polish. Using a cloth with rough textures can damage the wood finish, as well as can dusting without a polish. Be consistent with the polish. A different dusting polish each time will create a milky, filmy appearance to the wood finish. The wood only needs a waxing about three to four times a year. Consist dusting will keep up the luster. Lift objects off the wood to move them, rather than dragging them across the surface. Placing felt underneath decorations provides further protection and helps when you forget to pick up an object, especially when you are dusting. When you are vacuuming, slow down and vacuum carefully around the base of the furniture. It's easy to knick furniture feet when you are in hurry to get the vacuuming over with. If you do spill something on the wood, dab it up-don't rub it into the grain. Pledge dust over the area and buff the wood. It should come back to its usual appearance. If not, or if you have a scratch in the wood, apply shoe polish (the same shade, of course) to the wood. Before trying it completely over the surface, though, be sure to test a small, inconspicuous area in order not to ruin the whole piece in an over-zealous attempt to fix a minor area.
