A popular sport liked by many, harness racing is a special type of horse race. Lot's of people wager on these races, and large amounts of money can be at stake at harnes racing races. Rather than the races being dependent on just the drivers and the horses, technology now plays a major part as well. Some insight into the history of harness racing and it's inception will be shared with you in this article. Harness racing requires horses to race in a special gait, the pace or the trot. The little two wheeled cart where the driver sits is called the sulky. Harness racing is restricted to a specific breed of horse, the Standardbreds, as history indicates that only this breed of horse was able to pace or trot one mile within the required time limits. A horse would be included in the books if they were able to meet these requirements. Different countries host different variations of the races. For example, continental Europe the main races are in the form of trotter harness races. Australia, New Zealand, Macau and the United States host more pacing races. In the United States, 80 - 90% of the races are pacing races. The pacers are known to be less likely able of breaking the strides because of the hobbles and hopples; which is why more people prefer this type of race. The races usually start from a motorised starting point/gate. After the horses have lined up to the gate they are guided towards the start line. However, some European countries and some races in Australia do not utilise the gate. In North America the races are usually one mile long. The horses are kept track off and they have a mark that shows their winning time, and which horse crossed the line the fastest. Harness racing has been in important sport to many, since its inception. Strategy and technique are both key to being sucessfull in harness racing. The so-called Stantardbred horses sire founding goes back to a grey horse by the name of Messenger who was one of the most famous race horses in the United States. Harness racing has increased in popularity around the globe and has improved a lot over the years. Harness racing is enjoyed in many European countries and parts of America. Related Articles -
