As a general rule, make up has a shelf life of about three months after its been opened. The reason is make up contains different natural and chemical ingredients which break down over time or allow bacteria to grow. Many women, however, forget all about their make up brushes. If you've been using the same make up brush every day, it will have residual bits of shadows or blushes still attached to it. Tapping out the excess is a good start, but some of the powder will likely still be sticking to the brush itself. As you continue using it, you may inadvertently be painting your face with germs and bacteria. Unclean make up brushes are one of the leading causes of blemishes and in some cases can often lead to infections. Look at it this way. If you have a slight cough or cold, the germs are in the air and on your skin. When you do your make up, these germs can attach themselves to the brush as well. Going forward, you are continuing to expose yourself to these germs if you don't clean up your tools. Cleaning your make up tools is actually a simple task that should be performed at least twice a week. Proper maintenance of your brushes will give them a longer lifespan as well. Soak your brushes in some soapy lukewarm water for about ten minutes. A gentle soap, such as baby shampoo or wash is ideal to keep your tools clean without being too harsh. If you have some resistant make up sticking to the brushes, gently work it out with your fingers. Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove all remaining dirt and soap. Don't rub too much at your brushes to dry them. You can blot them gently with a soft towel to remove the bulk of the water and then spread them out on a clean towel to air dry. It's important to let them dry completely before using them again, as moisture can be a breading ground for bacteria. Not only that, but make up doesn't always respond well to wet brushes. Proper care of your make up brushes will not only give clean tools to work with, but it cuts down on pore clogging dirt that harms your complexion.
