Freedom, Most Americans don’t get it… By Larry Whittler When I was growing up in the forties and fifties it was understood that you would serve your country, you could do so by voluntarily joining one of the branches of the armed forces or you would be drafted by the Army, I chose the Navy. At the time it was just something you did, it was a part of being an American. You were proud to wear the uniform and represent what it stood for which was freedom and justice for all. You earned the right to be an American… To this day I appreciate what the service did for me, I went from a boy to a man, I learned skills that I still use today and most importantly I learned that freedom is not free… Today men and women who get it are fighting to keep you free! President John Kennedy said it best, Inaugural address January 20, 1961: “And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” Today’s alternative to the draft… Well let’s see… I can become a drug addict during my teen age years, which if I watch my P’s & Q’s I can eventually go in to dealing drugs. I’ll learn new skills, drive by shootings, how to rob the local gas station, how to adapt to prison surrounding… Or, I can join a gang and steal from my neighbors; intimidate the local business establishments, kill anyone that accidentally stumbles on to the gang’s turf which is plainly marked by artistically talented gang members… Or, I can use what I learned in school: There is no penalty! The three branches of government, what did you say? If someone doesn’t do what you like beat them up, now your talking my language… Speaking of language, a sentence isn’t a sentence unless it contains the “f” word. Or the teacher gets to teach your child the finer things in life, staying after school and being the teachers pet has new meaning. Or, I can be an “illegal immigrant” and bring every bad habit I have and introduce it to the locals without penalty. If I don’t like the local government or religions I will get enough of my pals to take over the whole town, vote them out of office and install my own little government. Wow, what a country! Or, I can go out and knock up as many girls as I can, the government will pay for all the hospital bills during pregnancy and the Grandparents will take care of the children. That way I can hang out with my friends, you know get high and play video games… This is a great life… Government for “ME” the people, No Penalty! Or, I can be a senator and go to Washington DC. You know, where a past Mayor was a convicted Drug addict. I’ll make laws, build a nice little retirement for myself and be above the law… I like this one! Being drafted and serving our country was a good thing! I hope it’s not too late! If you don’t contribute to your future, there will be no future… Nothing invested, nothing gained…. If you don’t teach your children the value of being an American they will see no value and our way of life will disappear. If you don’t contribute to Freedom, there will be no freedom for your children… You had better get it, because the next red light might be the one where they pull you from your car, shoots you, while hundreds of people watch… On the news that night, the talking heads will be asking the question. Why didn’t some body help? Unfortunately, I have been hearing this phrase a little too much lately…. I know, I’m repeating this… “And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” You can’t get it from books; you have to walk the path to freedom each and every generation!
