Many doctors have adult sized stethoscopes in their medical practice. You can see them when the doctors walk around the building sporting the device around their necks. In a setting where babies are often looked at as much as adults, such as in an emergency room or walk-in clinic, it is a good idea to also have a pediatric stethoscope available. The reason for this is that adult stethoscopes are not likely to work as well on infants and babies as those that are designed for smaller bodies. A stethoscope is a necessary tool for every doctor to have, whether they are treating adults or children. This device allows them to quickly monitor the heart and lungs of a patient. They will be able to detect a slow, fast, or irregular heartbeat. It can also allow the doctor to listen for congestion within the lungs and chest. Having the ability to listen to internal sounds can allow doctors to administer to proper treatment for a child or adult who is sick or injured, as well as diagnose the patient with the right condition. The difference between an adult stethoscope and a baby stethoscope is primarily the size of the bell. It is much smaller on a child stethoscope, which makes it easier to hear the heart of a small patient. An adult bell size is just too large for most children under the age of 5 years old. If you cannot correctly detect the heartbeat and other sounds inside the body, a life threatening problem could go by undetected. Stethoscopes for children also tend to have soft sealing tips, making it even easier to hear inside a child's body. It is also important that the ear buds work properly on a pediatric stethoscope. The ear pieces should fit correctly within the doctor's ears. It is also helpful if they come with the right amount of padding to effectively block out the rest of the noise in the room so the doctor can hear the child's heartbeat well. Having the ability to change out the ear plugs is beneficial, in case the one size fits all models do not work well for you. As you can see, having a pediatric stethoscope on hand is important, especially in an environment that treats infant and adult patients. Trying to listen to a baby's heartbeat with an adult sized stethoscope may not be as accurate or could be more difficult than using one designed for a smaller chest area. Being unable to correctly monitor the heart and lungs of a young patient could put the child in grave danger. Therefore, doctors in ER's and other clinics should be well equipped to see patients of all ages.
