If you are in the market for an appliance to cool your home, you may wonder how window air conditioning works and whether it is the right method for you. Much depends on how much of your home you want to cool at a time. If you intend to keep all of the rooms in the house cool all of the time, then you are better off with a whole house central air system. However, if you only need to keep a relatively small portion of your home cool, such as a room or two, then you will save money by going with window air conditioning. Window air conditioning is designed to cool a room, and this type of unit would sit in a window so that the warm air from the room can be vented outside. When the warm season is over, some people remove the window air conditioning units and store them in order to avoid a potentially drafty room. Some window air conditioning units can be made permanent and there are ways to get around the draftiness of the older models. The way window air conditioning works is that the room air passes over refrigerant or cooling coils contained in the air conditioner. The unit contains a compressor that sends cooled refrigerant through the coils so that the air that is passing over them is cooled. The cool air is then sent back into the room. As the unit removes heat from the air, it also removes humidity from the room. Humidity is removed as it passes over the cooling coils of the window air conditioning unit. If the window air conditioning unit is larger than necessary for the space you plan to cool, the room will cool more quickly and the air conditioner may not have the opportunity to remove very much humidity from the room. This is why sizing your window air conditioning unit properly is a very important part of purchasing a unit. It can actually be more energy efficient as well as effective to use a smaller model that takes longer to cool a room so that it has enough time to remove the humidity. Otherwise, you can end up with a cool but clammy room that is not as comfortable as a cool dry room. Some window air conditioning units include new energy-saving features that allow the compressor to cycle on and off, which helps to lower the cost of operation. Other energy efficient features include accurate thermostats and even timers that allow you to have your unit come on at certain times of the day or other timers that allow you to set the unit to turn on or off based on your needs. As you can see, the method by which window air conditioning units cool a room is fairly simple. As you look for the right model for you, the main thing you want to look for is the right sized unit for the room you want to cool. You can ask a representative at your local home improvement store to help you determine the right size for your room.
