Installing a swing set in your backyard is a great way to encourage your kids to play outside. To ensure they provide hours of safe outdoor play and fun, it is important that they are installed and anchored correctly. There are two methods to secure a swing set to the ground: concrete or anchoring stakes. Before getting started, you'll want to completely assemble your swing set and place it where you want it go in your yard. Make sure the legs are even and the swing set does not wobble. If you are securing the swing set using concrete, first mark the position of each leg of the swing (use spray paint or a stake to mark the spot), then move the swing to the side.Next, dig a 12-inch diameter hole 12 to 18 inches deep at the positions where you marked each swing set leg will go. Dig out the sides of the hole at the bottom so that the hole is wider at the bottom than at the top for added stability. Third, place a few bricks or about 2 inches of gravel in the bottom of each hole and then move the swing set back in place. The legs of the swing set should be resting on top of the bricks or gravel. Adjust the level of the gravel or a brick in each post hole until all the legs are even and the swing set is level and does not wobble. The next step is to mix some concrete and pour it directly into each of the holes around the swing set leg. Fill the hole until the concrete is approximately 1 inch below the top surface. Let the concrete set for about a week until it is completely set and dry. If you are using fast setting concrete mix, fill the holes around the swing set legs until they are filled approximately 3 to 4 inches below the top. Then pour water onto the concrete mix and allow it to soak in. Allow the cement to harden for at least 4 hours before you attempt to use the swing set. Finally, finish filling the holes and cover the concrete with the dirt you removed when digging the holes for the legs so it is not a tripping hazard. To secure the swing set using anchoring stakes, first check to see if the legs of your swing set have anchoring holes near the bottom of each leg. If it does not already have anchor holes, you will need to drill them about two inches from the bottom of each leg.Next, hammer or screw a swing set anchoring stake into the ground next to each leg until the hook part of the stake is just above the surface. Be sure to insert each anchor in the ground at an angle pointing toward the center of the swing set.Secure each anchor to the swing set at the holes in the bottom of the legs. Depending on the swing set, the anchor itself may be designed to hook into the hole in the leg or you may also need to thread a strap or chain through the hooks in the anchoring stake and bolt it to each of the legs. Lastly, cover the top of the anchor with soil or other surface material so it is not a tripping hazard.
