Engine oil is a very important fluid to have in your cars engine. The engine oil in your car protects, cools and lubricates the inner engine parts.Older cars need to be maintained and checked more often than newer cars do. There are a few reasons why you would need to check the oil level in the engine of your car. After many months of driving your car the engine oil in your car does thin out in time, evaporation does happen, oil breakdown does occur because of the extreme constant heat, which means oil loss and would mean you would need to check your cars oil more often until the next oil change.Plus you would possibly need to add some oil to prevent the start of a more serious problem. Another reason why you would check the engine oil level in your car,is before you go on a long trip.It would not be good to leave without checking, when your car may need a 1 quart or 2. I will explain below how to check your engine oil. The Items you will need is a paper towel or a rag,oil fill funnel and engine oil. 1. To begin have your paper towel or rag handy,go to your car and leave the supplies in the front of your car for a little later. Now go to the inside of your car and underneath the steering wheel is a lever, which should say hood on it,pull it out and the hood should pop up. 2. Now go to the front of your car and lift the hood up a little, there is a little lever under the front tip of the hood, which moves to one side and releases a hook so you can lift the hood up. 3. While you have the hood up look down and on top of the radiator there is a long metal bar that holds the hood up,lift it up and look up under the hood, there is a hole where the other end of the metal pole hooks into and keeps the hood up secure. This hole is for the bar to connect into and should be on the upper right inside of the hood.Make sure the hood and bar are nice and secure before proceeding. 4. What you are looking for now is the engine oil dip stick. The dip stick is located around near the engine and should have the word oil on it,a hook to pull it out and or the top of the dip stick is a different color. 5. Once you find the dip stick, pull it out and with your rag wipe the oil off the tip,put the dip stick back and pull it out again, now on the same end where you wiped the oil off,on the dip stick there should be four lines and an oil mark on one of the lines. This should tell you if you need to add oil or not. 6. What the four lines are is,if the oil mark is on the first line, this means you need to add 3 or four quarts of oil,if the oil mark is on the second line you add 2 or 3 quarts of oil,if the oil mark is on the third line, you need to add 1 or 2 quarts,i the oil mark is on the last line you don't need to add any oil, because this is the full line, which means your car has the proper amount of oil. From 1 line to the other is 1 quart of oil. 7. Now if you need to add any oil,the oil fill cap is either on the top of the engine or on 1 side of the engine on top of the valve cover. What you do is turn the cap counter clock wise which will loosen the cap and then you have to pry the cap up or twist it off. 8.After the cap is off,get your oil funnel and put the narrow part of the funnel into the oil fill hole, now get your oil you need to add, open that cap and pour the oil in and slowly add the amount of oil you need, because the oil can overflow if poured in too quick and will create a mess. Now go back and recheck the dip stick to see where the oil mark is.Depending on where the oil mark is you might or might not need to add more oil.
