Almost everyone likes to save a little money now and then and it is easy to save money on your home energy bill by using the most energy efficient light bulbs. It may seem a little simple to think about light bulbs as a cost saving measure, but with some of the most energy efficient light bulbs available today, it can be both simple and effective. Before investing in the most energy efficient light bulbs, it may be good to think about how much you currently spend on home lighting costs. Electricity bills can vary widely depending on what electricity is used for in the home, for example some homes use electricity for both heating and cooling. Heating and cooling can make it difficult to determine how much is used for those appliances and how much for lighting. To understand the benefits of using the most energy efficient light bulbs, you will need to figure out your current costs. A simple formula can help to determine how much energy is directly used for lighting. First you will need to know the wattage of each bulb in use. For example, a 100 watt incandescent light bulb used for one hour each day will use approximately 3.1 kilowatt hours (kWh) in a 31 day month or 0.1 kWh daily. Once you have determined the number of light bulbs in your home, the wattage of each, and the estimated usage, you can calculate the overall kilowatt hours per month that you use for lighting. The next step in understanding your potential savings by switching to the most energy efficient light bulbs is to find out how much your electricity costs per kilowatt hour. To do this, you can call your electrical provider or check a recent billing statement. For purposes of this exercise, you can use the amount of the actual power used and any associated delivery charges, etc. as they apply to a kilowatt hour. In our example, if one kWh costs $0.25 and you use a 100 watt bulb 1 hour per day, your monthly cost for electricity is $0.78 or $9.36 per year. With this information, you are ready to calculate the difference between incandescent and the most energy efficient light bulbs. There are two kinds of light bulbs available which are both very energy efficient. If you choose to use compact fluorescent bulbs, a 25 watt bulb will produce the amount of light equivalent amount to a 100 watt incandescent bulb. Running a CFL bulb for 1 hour per day for a month will use 0.8 kWh and cost only around $2.40 per year. The other type of most energy efficient light bulbs is LED or light emitting diode. A 13 watt LED bulb can provide the same amount of light as a 100 watt incandescent bulb. These may actually be the most energy efficient light bulbs. In the same example of 1 hour lighting use per day, the LED bulb will cost only $1.20 to operate for a year. Even though an LED light bulb may cost more to purchase, it will not need to be replaced for a very long time and you may find that it can pay for itself through energy savings.
