Halogen light bulbs were first introduced on the market in the 1950 by General Electric as an energy-efficient, long-lasting alternative to standard incandescent and fluorescent bulbs. Today, halogen light bulbs are most commonly used in home lighting fixtures (floor lamps and ceiling and wall light fixtures), as well as other applications, such as automobile headlights and lighting for theatre and photography. Halogen light bulbs are a type of electric lamp that contains a small amount of a halogen gas. They are comprised of a tungsten filament surrounded by halogen gas. Halogen gas is basically an inert gas mixed with a series of nonmetal elements (a halogen) that have a specific reaction to the presence of electricity. Inside the halogen light bulb, the halogen gas (usually bromine or iodine) causes any tungsten particles that separate from the lit filament to eventually settle back on the filament. This prolongs the life of the bulb by preventing the particles from attaching to the inside of glass lamp casing. If this did not happen, the particles would gradually build up over time and block out more and more of the light being emitted. Halogen light bulbs are energy-efficient because they can operate at higher temperatures than standard incandescent light bulbs. By operating at a higher temperature, halogen light bulbs can produce the same amount of light while using less energy. Likewise, they can supply more light using the same amount of energy. Besides the energy-efficiency benefit, operating at a higher temperature allows halogen light bulbs to produce light with a brighter, whiter, and hotter color temperature, making halogen light bulbs a closer approximation to natural daylight than other types of electric bulbs. They also last longer than normal incandescent light bulbs and some fluorescent lights. Because of the whiter, brighter light they emit, and the longer lifespan and energy-efficiency they offer over previous automotive bulbs, halogen light bulbs have become the standard for bulbs in the automotive industry since the 1990s. Besides being the industry standard, they have also become a point of differentiation between automakers looking to set their cars apart from the rest. For example, high intensity discharge (HID) and xenon headlights, which use the same principles as halogen light bulbs, are commonly offered in many luxury and sports cars. These types of HID and xenon headlights produce a super-white or even a blue-tinted light, making for a dramatic aesthetic appearance and improved visibility when driving at night. Besides being commonly used in homes and businesses, and becoming the standard for automotive headlights, halogen light bulbs are also widely used for theatrical and production stage lighting and in photography because they are able to most closely simulate the color temperature of natural sunlight. They are also used in some film and slide projectors, because of the intensity of the light they produce, resulting in a sharp, vivid image projection over a great distance. Halogen light bulbs are also used in architectural applications, such as exterior building lighting because of the warm, glowing light they produce, that promotes an inviting aesthetic appeal.
