Although it is most common to have t shirt messages which are satirical, political, or just grumpy, a designer has launched a t shirt range which she believes will help to promote a positive message to disadvantaged African and African-American groups. The designer's modern twist on the now very familiar t shirt message is intended to give the wearer a confidence boost, something which has perhaps been sorely missing from the t shirt ranges previously available through superstores and online retaillers. The main difference between Dara Dada's work and that of many cheap e-commerce sellers is that Dada will focus upon African designs for her t shirt range, and also African-print trousers and skirts. The inspirational t shirt will be used to encourage young people to feel better about them, and also to have a great deal of healthy feelings of self-esteem, which is often missing from today's youth culture. By emphasising the importance of these features, Dada has produced a range of different t shirt messages with phrases such as "God's Gift to Humanity' and 'Be Patient. God's Still Working on Me'. These t shirt parables are designed, Dada says, to try and help the young people have pride in their passions, whether that passion is for religion, relationships, or family members. Having this kind of pride will help to steer these teenagers away from bad decisions which could have negative impacts on the rest of their lives. Dada is hoping to reverse the trend of many years, and make a difference to these young people through the power of the t shirt message, but it is not clear whether the symbols will have any effect on how the youth choose to spend their time. Some celebrities have also been using the power of positive t shirt affirmations to try and influence the way they are seen in the media. This has not yet had any real impact, and most celebrities still struggle to make the press accept the famous' own message. This doesn't mean that it can't be done, and Dada is certainly to be praised for trying, but it does beg the question of whether the positive message can ever be passed on through a t shirt phrase. For the most part, the message of a t shirt has been 'look at my phrase - it's smart/witty/relevant to current events'. What the t shirt has never said is that it offers a positive message to its wearer. This could all change; of course, the revolution in what people are wearing across their chests could start with these Celebrities, and then go on to modern youth. However, for the most part, previous t shirt messages which purported to be positive, such as 'glamour puss' and so on, have actually been worn in a sarcastic manner. This means that the t shirt phrases such as 'God's Gift to Humanity’ might not be taken in the same spirit that Dada intends. Since she cannot decide who buys or wears the t shirt, she is essentially losing control of these positive messages, leaving them open to other interpretations.
