Deck lighting has the potential to transform a back yard into an alternate living space by creating an environment that is dynamic, inviting and relaxing. Effective deck lighting will encourage more time to be spent outside enjoying the deck, getting your money's worth from not just the lighting but the entire backyard experience. Deck lighting allows you to use the space effectively and can draw attention to areas of interest through strategic placement and angling of the lights to provide a highlighting effect. Deck lighting can also increase the safety of the back yard at night, increasing visibility to prevent slips, trips, and falls. When installing deck lighting it is good to think of it as a long term plan. With this in mind, incorporating low voltage and solar powered lights can be a way to lower the electric bill while adding to the variety and versatility of the lighting plan. Low voltage deck lighting requires less energy to operate than more traditional, higher voltage electrical lights. Solar powered deck lighting reduces the energy usage even further by relying on the natural energy provided by the sun. The lack of energy costs altogether for solar powered deck lighting is offset somewhat by a higher initial price. Both low voltage lights and solar powered deck lighting are good cost effective options for the overall lighting plan. Installation for deck lighting does not always need to involve a paid professional. Deck post lights are a simple way to add to the deck lighting with little installation required. You can also use a do it yourself deck light kit that is designed to include a complete lighting package that you can assemble and install yourself, including all necessary materials and detailed instructions. Both of these installation options are available at your local home improvement store or online. Other options to consider when setting up your deck lighting can include involving rail lighting. This can set up a nice perimeter of light around the deck as well as being used for accent lighting by angling it toward points of interest. Recessed deck lighting can be useful for the stairwells, a wise investment to add to the safety of being able to literally watch your step. This functional form of deck lighting can also be used to illuminate paths and walkways. Additionally, rope lights and even tiki torches can be used to add some variety and personal flair to the deck lighting setup. Installing your deck lighting does not need to be an overly complex task but you should be mindful to follow the instructions provided in the kit and follow safety guidelines. Use a detailed plan for setting up your deck lighting and make sure before you begin that you have all the necessary tools and materials. Turn off the power to the outdoor lights at the breaker box before you start working and it is a good idea to test each individual light as you install them rather than waiting until the end to see if everything works at once.
