Proper bath lighting goes beyond simply lighting the area directly around the mirror. Bath lighting needs to consider the bathroom as a whole and includes some important considerations. The primary goal of the bath lighting at the mirror is to minimize glare while casting very little to no shadow. The bath lighting for the entire bathroom should also consider light placement, which fixtures to use, the impact of dimmer switches, and bulb types. The ideal bath lighting for the mirror will completely illuminate your face while casting no shadows. The best way to achieve this is to have the light fixtures flanking the mirror. This bath lighting usually gives the best coverage with the least shadows but there are other placement options available that can provide similar results. Some bath lighting fixtures are required to be installed above the mirror. Some of these fixtures offer the flexibility of aiming the opening of the light upwards or downwards. Other fixtures in bath lighting allow you to install the fixture directly on the mirror, often a large plate mirror. With this option, it is important to pick out a fixture that is finished on all sides since the mirror will show the backside of the fixture in the reflection. Another option with the placement of bath lighting fixtures is the use of recessed lighting. Recessed lights blend directly into the architecture and can be used alongside a mirror using more than one light that complements the others. The type of fixture used in bath lighting can go beyond mere functionality to focus more the decorative aspect to add some luxury and style to the bathroom. The decorative fixtures can complement the metal in the rest of the bathroom on areas such as faucets, cabinet handles and door knobs using finishes such as chrome or brass. The glass in decorative bath lighting fixtures can also offer some personalization through colored tints but if colored glass is used it should be done so away from the mirror. Decorative fixtures can complement the trim in recessed lighting as well and the two forms of bath lighting are often used together. Dimmer switches are a good addition when installing your bath lighting. They allow you to adjust the atmospheric light in the room to provide a more subdued room when needed to contrast the usual full illumination of the bathroom. Dimmer switches also provide the added benefits of using less energy and increasing the life of the bulb. The bath lighting bulbs are available in a wide variety of styles including halogen bulbs and incandescent bulbs with a glaze to help reduce glare. There are even neodymium bulbs that can simulate sunlight through their tint, offering an alternative to natural light when it's not available in your bath lighting arrangement. Proper bath lighting is influenced by the placement of the light fixtures, the types of fixtures used, the installation of dimmer switches, and which bulb is used. The combination of these factors will help maximize the bath lighting to enhance the bathroom to an effective combination of both form and function.
