A large percentage of injuries that occur during the operation of any power tool are a direct result from the lack of wearing the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for that power tool, and tile saws are no exception. Even if you are an experienced user of tile saws, the very nature of using tile saws presents a certain amount of natural risk which cannot be mitigated by experience or even careful following of other safety procedures. Therefore, before you operate tile saws or allow anyone around you to operate one, make sure that the proper PPE is available and is being used. The most basic piece of PPE that should be used in conjunction with tile saws are safety glasses. Since tile saws involve a rapidly revolving blade cutting through objects that produce a lot of dust and debris, it is important that your eyes are always covered. Not only does this help protect your ability to see clearly while you are using tile saws, glasses can help protect your eyes from any objects that could permanently damage your eyes if you are not wearing them. Failure to wear safety goggles could prevent serious permanent damage to your eyes. Another important piece of PPE to have with you when operating tile saws is a set of heavy duty non-slip gloves. Since a safe and proper cut depends on your ability to secure a piece of tile to be cut, make sure that whatever gloves you use are comfortable and help you hold the tile. Remember that since tile saws use water to cool the blade, pieces you are cutting are inevitably going to get wet. If you don't have a proper set of gloves to help you secure the pieces you are cutting on tile saws, you could lose control of the piece and cause harm to yourself or others. Two extra pieces of PPE to consider when using tile saws are hair nets and steel toed boots. If you have long hair, it could get caught in tile saws and cause you harm, while if you are cutting rather large and heavy pieces of tile on tile saws, having steel toed boots can protect your feet from damage in the event of dropping a large chunk of masonry. While neither of these two pieces are as essential as the first two mentioned, it may be worth the extra precaution when you are dealing with tile saws. When dealing with tile saws, always remember to have the proper personal protective equipment. Whether you are experienced with tile saws or not, having the right PPE at all times during operation can be the difference between an inconsequential occurrence and a disastrous event. Make sure that you have all of the PPE you need to complete the job safely. If you fail to wear the proper PPE, even your expertise and otherwise safe operation of tile saws will not be enough to protect you from the random and unfortunate events that sometimes occur when using power tools.
