People often wonder what can make for a perfect African holiday vacation. Well there are many places to go in Africa that can make for an amazing and memorable trip to this wondrous land but some places like Lagos really stand out from other metropolis and tourist destinations in Africa. Lagos happens to be a huge city with a population of about eight million people. It is an extremely happening and lively place with friendly people and so many opportunities to just relax and have such a good time. Some walls that stand here that are called the City Walls of Lagos can be said to be as old as the 5th century. These were made when the Byzantines took control here with the conquest of the Romans. The 13th century re-conquest by the Romans help leave and impact of Goth and other later Roman like styles in some of the city`s buildings. The Moors ruled here for many centuries before the Portuguese took control in the 17th century. Near the end of the 16th century, a young boy that ruled this kingdom actually heightened the statues of this place from that of being a town to that of being a city. This city had become the capital of the territory thanks to the Algarve Kingdom. The boy king`s statue can be seem near the city town hall and is a tribute to this wise king. The city`s fortress is a strong statement of historical legacy. It shows how it was modified by changing it from time to time by the ruling class of the different periods with the consequent improvements it went through with these periods. After the Portuguese took control, there is also a lot of Renaissance influence present in the city with churches like São João Hermitag of medieval times and many other example of old churches build in the 16th century like Santa Maria of Misericórida.
