According to the recent studies, animé has become a popular enjoyment among different viewers, regardless of age and gender. Animés have a unique way of telling a simple story, a factor which makes them so memorable to their audiences. One animé title would surely stir a response from a lot of people, especially if that series or movie had caused such an appeal to its audience. Up until today, many people still watch the classic animé movies and series through anime streaming online. The top five favorite animé movies were created by the best animators Japan has to offer, some of them the pioneers of Japanese animation. The good thing about them is that they still move the audience in a way like none other has done before. Metropolis From the highly acclaimed animator, Ozamu Tezuka comes one of the best animé films. The story was based from the 1949 Metropolis manga and inspired by the 1927 German silent film of the same name. The film was released on May 2001, earning a box office hit of $95 million worldwide. The film is highly accredited for its various topics that cover discrimination, unemployment and political issues. The story is about a boy named Kenichi who travels to Metropolis, a place where humans and robots coexist, and meets Tima, a girl robot. The two struggle together against a revolution and discrimination in order to build a more peaceful world for both humans and robots. Spirited Away This academy award winning movie was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The story is about a little girl named Chihiro who was trapped with her parents in the mysterious town full of spirits. She met a boy named Haku who helps her regain her parents and go back into the human world. The story itself is influenced by Japanese folklore and myths, making it an interesting work of art. The film was first released in 2001 and was later adapted into English. Howl’s Moving Castle This fantasy animé film was also written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki was based on the novel by Dianna Wynne Jones. The story revolves around a young girl named Sophie, the love interest of the male protagonist, Howl. As Sophie was cursed by the Witch of the Wastes, she encounters an array of strange and magical creatures in the midst of a war. The film was first released in September 2004 at the Venice Film Festival then was later shown in Japanese theaters on November 2004. Its worldwide box office hit went on a $231.7 million gross, labeling it as the most financially successful Japanese animated film in history. The film itself acquired different awards such as Best Director (Tokyo Animé Awards, 2005) and Best Japanese Movie Overall (Mainichi Film Awards, 2004). Steamboy Sunrise studios, along with Katsushiro Otomo, dedicated 10 years of production to release the most expensive full length Japanese animé movie. Steamboy was first premiered in July 2004 at Japanese theaters and garnered a gross of over $10 million. It was later translated into English and shown in the United States on May 2005, starring the voices of Anna Paquin, Alfred Molina and Patrick Stewart. Steamboy is set in an alternate Victorian Europe, with Ray Steam as the main protagonist of the story. He is a young inventor prodigy who discovers a new form of energy capable of powering an entire nation. Grave of the Grave of the Fireflies has moved hearts of the audience as they see the effects of the war through the eyes of two young orphans. The film, written and directed by Isao Takahata, is a reflection of the World War II and the poor socio-economic situation of Japan. The main characters, Seita and his younger sister Setsuko, struggle to live everyday in the destroyed country and find themselves in a famine. The movie was accredited for its anti-war theme, earning praises all over the world. Astonishingly, the film still gains popularity up until today as people still watch it through anime streaming online.
