It's Never Too Late to Prepare Your Roof for a Hurricane!

Home Improvement,Home Repair
Scenarios such as hurricanes are a perfect example of uncontrollable events and the damaging effect they can have on houses that are in their path is unimaginable. Homeowners need to realize that even though these natural occurrences are beyond their control, the damage that results can be prevented with the proper preparation involving strengthening the home roofing system. Even aging roofs can be helped to withstand this catastrophic weather.

The following are some tips which may be helpful in boosting the strength of the housetop to make it a “hurricane-proof” system!

  • Hurricane Resistant Shingles - There are shingles available that are resistant to the strong winds caused by this type of weather. These shingles are manufactured with advanced building technology and they are thicker and stronger the average version. When installing these special types of shingles over plywood, longer nails may be required in order to install them properly and ensure that they will be durable.

  • Water Barriers - Instead of sealants, water barrier products should be used as they are more effective when replacing shingles and sealing plywood joints. Sealants are only effective when installing new systems or if shingles are being removed.

  • Brace the Gables - Gable ends are the triangular braces located in the attics in most homes and support the overall structure of the system. Gable bracing is recommended for houses located in hurricane prone areas since this can help protect the roofing material from wind damage.

  • Plywood and Trusses - Using the wrong length of nails for the attachment of plywood and trusses exposes the structure to more of a risk from exposure to severe hurricanes. When attaching plywood to trusses, it is recommended that longer nails be used to prepare the shingles for the possible damages caused by hurricanes. Using longer nails may not be a guarantee that the shingles will not be blown away by the strong winds but it may help lessen the damage to the entire structure. For example, if the plywood is completely blown off, water could easily get inside the house and cause severe damage to furniture and other fixtures.

  • Strengthen Wall-to-Roof Connections – Wall-to-roof connections help decrease the risk of losing the roofing structure during a hurricane, especially when the wall joint is strengthened. Outside corners, as well as the ends of the roof, are the most prone to hurricane wind damage and retrofitting the gable ends may be helpful because they are typically weaker than the hip ends. When strengthening these connections, the assistance of a professional contractor may be required to ensure that the task is properly completed.

  • Thorough Inspection - A thorough inspection and investigation of the overall system is very helpful in protecting the structure from any damage during a hurricane. Shingles should be carefully examined for any potential issues. Any issues should be carefully noted of the issues encountered during the inspection. These notes will be very helpful in the event that a contractor is hired and allow for an open discussion of problems that are discovered, allowing the contractor to offer suggestions for the best solutions.

Finally, it is important to keep in mind that the roofing system protects the entire household from disastrous natural events such as a hurricane. It is necessary for homeowners to know what needs to be done to keep their structure in one piece against these strong storms. It is highly recommended that owners of any structures that are located in areas that are prone to these natural disasters seek professional advice. Remember, it is never too late to prepare a roof for imminent hurricanes!
