You may have seen smart, sophisticated looking canines strutting their stuff in little sweaters, funny graphic t-shirts, and holiday dog apparel. Many dog owners think clothing for their pet is cute, but never try to put items on their pet. They believe their pup will shrug out of dog clothes within minutes, claw or chew through the clothes or otherwise make the entire endeavor fruitless. However, with proper training and a few tips on choosing clothes, you can teach your dog to be stylish with dog apparel. Suitable Dog Clothing First attempts at dog apparel should be simple. Your pet is not used to wearing clothing and can feel constrained by large pieces of fabric that wrap around his body or legs. One of the best items to start with is a simple, lightweight cotton shirt. Avoid clothing with embellishments like beads, rhinestones, hardened paint or patches. These items can be uncomfortable for your dog and he might chew off some items. For small dogs, these items can be choking hazards. Dog Apparel Fitting Session Although canine clothing comes in sizes, you are probably not going to be able to grab the perfect size from the rack each time. You will need to experiment with different styles and sizes to find the right fit for your dog. Once you find a type and size of clothing that works, stick with what your dog is used to and provide variety through different fabric patterns, colors and graphics. Clothes Practice Putting clothing on a dog is a lot like getting a growing infant or toddler dressed. It is easier to handle if you provide a fun distraction or entertainment. Provide your dog with one of his favorite chew toys, a rawhide strip or a treat. If you are rewarding him with a treat, make sure you ask him to sit or lay first so he does not get used to getting a special treat for nothing. Once he is occupied, carefully slip the clothing on and complete any snapping, buttoning or tying necessary. Once on, keep the dog apparel on as long as possible. Once your dog starts to scratch or bite at the clothing, it may be time to take it off. Try to keep the clothing on your dog a little bit longer each time he wears it. After a while, your pup will be so used to dog clothing, he may feel more comfortable with it on that not.
