Now that Mom is living by herself, you are probably worried about her safety. One way that you can help her to stay protected is to get her a guard dog. No, the dog doesn’t have to be one of the lip-snarling-can’t-stop-the-bad-attitude variety, but it probably shouldn’t be one of the too-small-to-scare-a-flea variety either. You can help Mom to choose a medium or large breed dog that has a nice temperament and a protective streak. Once you help Mom the perfect dog, you may have to help her teach the dog that she is the Alpha dog who must be obeyed. Choosing a Guard Dog for Mom The most important thing to remember when you are trying to find Mom a guard dog is to find one that she is comfortable with. Let her take the time to socialize with some of the medium to large dogs. When she finds one that she likes and that seems to like her, you can bring Samson home. Just the fact that Mom and Samson like each other is one of the most important parts of find a dog that will help keep Mom company while helping to keep her safe. Getting Ready for Samson Whether Mom gets a puppy or an adult dog, she will still have to make a few changes around her home to accommodate Samson. She will need a crate for Samson, which means finding space for the crate. Of course, she doesn’t have to leave Samson crated all day, but when she and Samson are establishing boundaries, the crate gives him a safe place to go and feel comfortable. As she and Samson get the boundaries established, she can let him out more often. Eventually, she may be able to do away with the crate fully and just let Samson roam around the house. He may of course, always love his crate, which is like a den to many dogs. Besides a crate, Mom also needs to move items that she doesn’t want Samson to mess with, especially if Samson is a puppy. Knickknacks that are on the bottom shelves or tabletops should be moved to a higher location until Samson becomes accustomed to the layout of the home. Mom also needs to have a dish for Samson’s water and one for his food. Speaking of food, she needs to find a good-quality dog food for Samson to help keep him healthy. She should also get Samson some toys and in particular chew toys. We can’t have this going awry because Samson ate her favorite pair of shoes. Training Samson Your Mom has to show Samson that she is the boss. This is extremely important for two reasons. The first is that Samson has to know that he is expected to listen to her. Mom has to feel in complete control, otherwise she will be fearful of Samson, which negates the whole idea. The second is that dogs are more likely to protect their pack leader, instinctually. The best way to establish that Mom is the leader is to have her eat before she feeds Samson. In the wild, the alpha dog always eats before the rest of the pack. In Mom’s case, she can eat a small snack before she puts the food in Samson’s bowl. It is important for her to finish her snack before she feeds him. Another way to establish the leadership role is to take Samson for a walk. When Mom gets Samson’s leash on, she has to walk out of the door first. In the wild, the alpha dog always leads the pack through new areas. Going up and down stairs is another time when Mom must walk before Samson. While they are walking together on level ground, Mom must keep the leash tight so that Samson can’t walk in front of her. During the training period, games like tug-of-war that mimic a power struggle must be avoided, as these give the Samson the opportunity to think that the leadership role is up for grabs. Mom should also take Samson to obedience training classes that will help Samson to learn basic commands while helping her to cement her role as the head honcho. Believe it or not, if your mom follows all of these guidelines when raising Samson, she will be extremely safe with him in the house. His appearance alone will be a physical deterrent for would be burglars, but once Samson sees her as his alpha, there is nothing he wouldn’t do to protect his alpha.
