Treating diaper rash naturally is simple for the folk medicine practitioner. Say goodbye to the messy white diaper rash remedies that contain harsh chemicals and dry baby’s skin. Most oxide remedies do little in the way of healing diaper rash. To effectively treat diaper rash, it is important to take a look at the cause of the rash and prevent it if possible. Herbal remedies will respond to a holistic approach and baby will be happy and rash-free once again. Spending a significant amount of diaper free time is the easiest way to clear up a diaper rash. Studies show that babies who are left diaper free are easier to potty train and have fewer skin irritations. Diaper rash is caused by bacteria and fungus infecting skin wrapped up in plastic. All skin breathes. Diaper rash is usually caused by leaving baby in wet, disposable diapers too long. There is a misconception that baby must always be diapered. This is absolutely false and a product of consumer culture. Most places in the world, babies have significant amounts of time being naked or barely clothed. A large absorbent pad will keep bedding and carpets clean while small babies rest diaper free. And let baby play and rest naked each day. You may be peed on now and then, but it is worth it. Disposable diapers pollute the environment and in many cases, the baby’s skin. Many commercially available disposable diapers contain bleach. And that bleach is toxic to fresh, new baby skin. Eliminate disposable diapers completely if possible. Diaper rash may disappear by making this change. Cloth diapers are more safe and sustainable. Use cloth whenever possible. If disposable diapers are a necessary evil you must live with, consider giving baby several diaper free time periods each day. Several herbal preparations are effective at healing diaper rash. Lavender essential oil applied directly to a diaper rash will soothe delicate baby skin and disinfect the area. Lavender is traditionally used to treat burns, and a severe diaper rash is very much like a burn. Lavender essential oil is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and safe for sensitive skin. To treat diaper rash with lavender essential oil, dab a few drops of oil on a cotton ball or directly on your finger and gently massage into the rash. Go gently with the first application and see if any adverse reactions appear. Apply the oil at each diapering or at least three times per day. Leave baby diaper free for a minimum of 15 minutes after application. Lavender also has a calming effect and you may notice baby is more peaceful when surrounded by the fragrance. Herbal salve is also effective at treating diaper rash. Many soothing skin herbs infuse into oil to create a potent healing ointment that is especially effective at treating diaper rash. Look for salves that contain Comfrey, Calendula, Plantain, and Lavender. There is a special magic in this combination. Calendula and Plantain are especially moisturizing and anti-septic. Comfrey heals skin tissue and Lavender relieves pain and discomfort. You may add a drop or two of lavender essential oil into the salve to amplify the power of the herbal remedy. Apply the salve at each diapering or at least three times per day. Leave baby diaper free for a minimum of 15 minutes after application so the remedy has time to absorb into the skin. Another simple diaper rash remedy is an herbal bath. Simply add ½ cup of both Calendula and Lavender flowers to baby’s bath. Add more if bathing baby in a large bathtub. The flower infusion is more potent if the herb to water ratio is smaller. Make the experience blissful for baby by gently exfoliating skin with the flowers. Be careful so no tiny Lavender flowers become lodged in baby’s ears. Also watch so baby does not eat the flowers. Bathe baby for at least 15 minutes in the warm flower bath. Notice the softness of the skin after the bath. An herbal flower bath soothes diaper rash and calms both baby and mama.
