Zithromax is an antibiotic drug belonging to macrolide antibiotics group of drugs. It has Azithromycin. It is used to treat bacterial infections such as skin infections, ear infections, and sexually transmitted diseases. It fights with bacteria to rule out the infections. Doctors also prescribe it for treatment of bacterial infections such as middle ear infection, pneumonia, tonsillitis and strep throat in children. Persistent chest pain or uneven heartbeats are other serious side effects of using Zithromax. Some patients may also have dark colored urine, clay colored stool or yellowing of skin or eyes. Some may even suffer from jaundice. Another severe side effect is low fever, sore throat, headache with severe skin reactions such as blistering, peeling or reddening of skin. Use of Zithromax could lead to severe skin reactions such as burning in eyes, pain in skin with reddening or purple spots spreading on face and upper body, which ultimately leads to blistering or peeling. Some patients may suffer from upset stomach, diarrhoea, loose stool, nausea, vomiting or stomach pain, which are chronic and persistent in nature. Some patients may develop decreased hearing or deafness, drooping eyelids, blurred vision, weakness in muscles, speech problems, problem while swallowing or other such side effects with use of Zithromax. Patients should call their doctor if they develop fast or irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness or fainting. Use of Zithromax could cause a severe intestinal condition called Clostridium difficile. It is associated with diarrhoea. This condition may occur while using Zithromax weeks to months after stopping it. Patients should avoid using anti-diarrhoea products or narcotic pain medications in this condition. It may worsen the condition. It is advisable to call the doctor if a patient suffers from persistent diarrhoea, abdominal or stomach pain, stomach cramp, blood or mucus in stool as it may be a sign of Clostridium Difficile. Prolonged use of Zithromax could cause oral thrush or a new yeast infection. Patients may develop white patches in mouth, a change in vaginal discharge, or other new symptoms.
