Zithromax is an antibiotic drug. It contains Azithromycin as its main active ingredient. It belongs to a group of drugs called macrolide antibiotics. It is used to treat bacterial infections. It is also used to treat certain sexually transmitted infections. Uses of Zithromax It is used for treatment of different types of bacterial infections. Precautions before using Zithromax Patients allergic to azithromycin or similar drugs such as erythromycin, clarithromycin or troleandomycin should not use Zithromax. They should also avoid this drug if they are allergic to any of its active or inactive ingredients. Patients should tell their doctor about any medicine being used before using Zithromax as it can interact with other medicines, vitamins, minerals or herbal products. It should be taken empty stomach, 1-2 hours before meal. Patients should avoid taking antacids containing aluminium or magnesium while using Zithromax. It could worsen certain medical conditions such as liver disease, kidney disease, a certain muscle disease called myasthenia gravis. It should only be used in pregnancy, if the doctor finds its use essential. Though it is expected to not harm the baby, it is advisable to avoid as its harmful effects are not fully known. This drug could easily pass into breast milk thus breast-feeling patients should consult their doctor before using it. Patients should avoid exposure to sun light or tanning beds while using Zithromax. It makes sunburn easy. Patients should use proper clothing and sunscreen before going in the sun. In case of overdose of Zithromax, patients should immediately seek medical assistance. Its overdose symptoms are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach discomfort. Use of antibiotics such as Zithromax could cause diarrhoea, which indicates another infection. In that case patient should stop using it and consult their doctor. Patients with history of a heart rhythm disorder or prolonged QT syndrome should not use Zithromax. It can worsen the condition of the patient. Zithromax may cause QT prolongation. Patients suffering from heart failure, slow heartbeat, QT prolongation in the EKG, family history of certain heart problems are at higher risk.
