In this article I will offer my opinion on the different alternatives and give you an idea of value, compatibility and durability. Dealing with compatibility first, fortunately almost all sets can fit each other so you don't have to worry too much about that as long as you are not buying plastic track. The wooden train set by Tidlo is compatible with all other major and own brands. The factors of value and durability go together. All the wooden railway sets are made from pressed wood composite, in most cases the cheaper the manufacture the reduced quality the wood composite and the more likely that it will break. Tidlo and John Crane before are renowned for good quality, they use better quality products for their track; I know that my word does not count for much so here are a couple of reviews I pulled off Amazon: ‘My 3 year old son loves this and it is a durable product.’ “The bridge that’s included is very strong which was required as inevitably it was going to be leaned about.” The next issue to address is value and cost. In the figure 8 starter set variety, you can expect to pay between £17 and about £30. The cheaper sets tend to be less durable and I think that the main reason that you but wooden toys and games for toddlers or kids is because you want them to very last: My 3 year old is using the same wooden trains I and his Aunt played with. The next question is what to you get in that large gap in price. All the sets come with a train and pretty much 3 carriages, just what exactly extra do you get? The solution is stuff to go around the edges to try out with. In the Tidlo train set you get a really nice bridge with brick work printing, this forms the cross over for the track and as mentioned above it really is sturdy. You also get lots of structures: A hospital, station, a couple of houses, traffic lights, a stop sign and 4 pylon traces. You also get some trees, shrubs and 4 farmyard animals that one could play with. Lastly you get a postman and a few wooden models of children to play with. These are really nice and in depth with great attention to details. All of these extras together make up the reason that this set stands apart from the rest. Your children will get the benefit of not just playing with the trains but being able to construct all sorts of scenarios and role play with the figures and buildings.
