Yaz is one of the most commonly used birth control pills in the U.S. Statistics reveal that the medication owns almost 20% of the market, as in 2008 the sells brought more than $600 million to the manufacturing company. Yaz is a combined-hormone contraceptive, having as one of the active ingredients drospirenone. The medication is prescribed to prevent pregnancy, to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder and to treat moderate acne in women at least 14 years old. The drug is available in form of pills which should be taken daily, at the same time every day respecting the order directed on the blister pack. If done so, Yaz is effective in preventing pregnancy in 99% of the cases. However, despite its efficiency, the drug has recently been the subject of several claims. The first problems occurred when the manufacturing company decided to realize television commercials which suggested that the drug is efficient in treating or preventing medical conditions like irritability, increased appetite, fatigue, headaches, bloating and muscle aches. In fact the medication has not been approved by the FDA against any of those conditions. As a result the Food and Drug Administration required the manufacturing company to chance the commercials and to issue advertisements about the real effects and side effects. The most common side effects of the drug include: headache, menstrual irregularities, nausea, vomiting, breast pain, fatigue, irritability, weight gain, and mood changes. However the more serious problems are related to the active ingredient drospirenone. Although all women taking birth control pills are at risk of developing blood clots, medications based on drospirenone increase that risk. Excessive blood clotting is a life threatening condition. If blood clots form, they can block a coronary artery and cause heart attack. If they reach the brain and block an artery there, the result will be a stroke. Patients, who suffer heart attacks or strokes, even if they survive, are likely to develop permanent disabilities. Because of these problems the medication is not recommended to women older than 35 or those who smoke. Patients who have liver, kidney or blood clotting problems, those who had certain types of cancer or suffered a heart attack or stroke are advised to avoid the drug. However all patients should discuss their particular situation with their doctors before starting a treatment. Besides that drospirenone is a hormone that can increase a patient’s level of potassium too much. That is why doctors should know about any other medication taken simultaneously that can have the same effect. Patients are also advised to take a blood test during the first month of treatment to check the potassium level. If during treatment they notice any of the following symptoms: persistent leg pain, unusual severe headaches, sudden shortness of the breath, weakness in the arms or legs, sudden blindness, trouble speaking or yellowing of the skin or eyes, they should contact their healthcare providers immediately. However, stopping the treatment without consulting a doctor is not recommended. If pregnancy occurs the risks of developing blood clots is even higher. Although the manufacturing company in collaboration with the FDA managed to update the product’s label, more and more Yaz birth control lawsuits are being filed all over the U.S. The plaintiffs are women who developed physical and emotional problems due to the medication. These lawsuits are based on the following injuries: blood clots, pulmonary embolism, stroke and heart attack, but some plaintiffs also file claims regarding the deceptive advertising. Considering that the number of legal complaints is rising, it is possible that a class action lawsuit will follow shortly. However until then all women who suffered serious injuries or developed severe side effects are advised to contact a product liability lawyer for a fee initial case evaluation. An experienced attorney will be able to present their legal options and to file a claim if that is needed.
