A bone cancer, also called, bone tumor, is said to be a neoplastic growth of tissue in bone. Abnormal growths observed in the bones can be either benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Bone tumors can be classified under two categories,one known as “primary tumors“, which originate within the bone or from cells and tissues which are derived from bone, second one as “secondary tumors” which originate in other sites and spread (metastasize) up to the skeleton. Carcinomas of the prostate, lungs, breasts, kidneys and thyroids are the primary carcinomas that most commonly spread to the bone. Secondary tumors are 50 to 100 times as common as primary bone cancers. Babies born with an umbilical hernia are also at risk of getting trapped in this disease. People with Li-Fraumeni syndrome which is itself a very rare genetic condition can also be in a danger of being hit by this disease. Previous treatment of a patient with chemotherapy can also be one of the causes of Bone cancer.
