CIJ printers are one of the most preferred printers to be used for commercial purpose. CIJ stands for continuous ink jet printers. These follow the same technology as the inkjet printers. The CIJ printers are the best known ones for the non- contact coding and marking applications in the industries. A non- contact process makes it more durable and suitable for long time usage. These printers are also known for their versatility in case of printing in various formats. Industrial printing comprises of texts and graphics of different shapes and sizes. These printers are capable of printing a variety of fonts, lines and styles at a large range of speeds. In continuous ink jet technology, the CIJ inks flow continuously through the system but the printing takes place only when it is commanded to do so. This is the reason why these printers are called so. There is a cylinder containing ink, which supplies ink to the print head by the pressure created by air. This ink then enters the nozzle, which further passes through the ceramic ring. With the help of an electric circuit, electric pulses are driven through the ceramic ring. Now there is a piezo- electric crystal inside the ring which compresses the tube containing ink. Thus, with the electric pulses, the ink changes into the form of droplets. These droplets are then charged and directed to subsequent places for drawing images and text. These droplets are the reason of construction of images on paper. The droplets which are not required for printing are then circulated back into the system to be used for further printing. With such a long track required by the ink to flow, it is very essential that the ink used should possess a slow drying quality. Otherwise due to the circulation of the ink, it will get dried quickly inside the printer. This will result in two disadvantages which are: • Consumption of large amounts of ink • Regular maintenance of the printer Due to the regular drying of the ink, new ink cartridges will be required again and again to keep pace with the large volume of work being carried out in industries. It may also affect the quality of the printing done. Secondly, the printers will be required to be cleared regularly to remove the dried ink as this may affect the working of the printer. Thus, special kinds of CIJ inks are manufactured by the ink producers to be used in such printers. This ink possesses the quality of slow drying for proper functioning of the printer. The viscosity of such type of ink is maintained at a constant level. This is done by adding a solvent. An automatic control system exists inside the CIJ printers which determine the amount of solvent to be added. This results in a proper flow of ink to give better printing results. The CIJ printers are able to print a lot of codes, expiration dates, bar codes and graphics which are generally the prime requirements in industrial printing. To add to it, they are inexpensive and portable which makes them preferable to be chosen as commercial printers.
