Vitiligo is a skin disorder that results in the skin becoming white in patches or completely. It can also lead to the hair of the head, eyelashes & body hair turning white. It occurs when the melanocytes, which are present in the skin, begin to get destroyed. Melanocytes are the cells in the skin, which create pigments. When these cells are destroyed, the skin becomes white in patches. There can be many reasons that lead to the destruction of the melanocyte cells. Whatever those reasons are, the effect of such destruction leads to Vitiligo, which in turn, is a huge social, psychological & emotional ordeal for the patient. Not only does it attract unwanted attention on the streets & in public places, it leads to a feeling of embarrassment among the patients, which takes a heavy emotional toll on them. With the advancement of modern medical science, various cures for vitiligo have become available to the doctors & patients. Some of these cures, for example, are Topical Psoralen Photo chemotherapy, Psoralen Photo chemotherapy, Topical Steroid Therapy etc. In the very early stages, the most common cures for vitiligo is the Topical Steroid Therapy. This therapy is made to work with the help of creams & ointments, which need to be applied on the affected area from time to time. If this is done successfully, then the affected patches may see re-pigmentation. Ideally, these creams & ointments need to be applied for three months in order to get the perfect cure for vitiligo. Although Topical Steroid Therapy is one of the simplest cures, its success rate is not always hundred percent. Under such circumstances, Topical Psoralen Photo chemotherapy has emerged as one of the most effective treatments for vitiligo. When there are only a few patches on the skin, which become de-pigmented, or white, this process is used as a cure for vitiligo. However, probably the most effective cure for vitiligo would be the Psoralen Photo chemotherapy. When doctors use this method, what they essentially do is, they expose the affected area to ultraviolet rays after applying psoralen on it. The only down side of using this therapy is that it takes a lot of time to heal.
