At hoarder's world, every whim finds room on the shelf - Cardboard Floor Displays Manufacturer

Business,Business News,Business Opportunities
Toni Rudig unpacks a Cardboard Floor Displays of dubious collectibles: aplastic parrot, a remote-controlled mechanical dog, an accuratemedical model of the human hip, and a shadow box with the label"In case of emergency, break glass" on the front and abottle of Fleischman's vodka inside. There isn't a trash bin in sight. "I don't throw anything away," says Rudig, owner ofToni's Hoarder's World. It's an impulse both practical and profitable. She's woven her oldtie-dye T-shirts into the headband that wreathes her freckled face. She's collected prosthetic human eyeballs and sold them to a tattooartist.

Rudig, 56, began channeling her hoarding inclinations into thevintage gift shop she opened in the Third Ward seven years ago. AtHoarder's World, "people love to dig through things,"Rudig says. "It's like a treasure hunt." "Three floors of treasure," a sign says. Off the top of a crowded Cardboard Floor Displays case in the first-floorshowroom, Rudig picks up a shriveled figurine.

It's the Mermaid ofFiji, a monster that starred in an episode of "Ripley'sBelieve it or Not." "She was a 'not,' " Rudig says. "We actually putsome lipstick on her to make her prettier." The mermaid's eclectic companions - purchased from sellers who cometo the store and at auctions and various sales - include a rainbowof Troll dolls, twin-reflex cameras and a Lego man the size of achild. Rudig has shot glasses painted to look like naked female torsos(naughty). Next to them is a button showcasing the face of PopeJohn Paul II (nice). Haphazardly strewn though they might seem, the objects in Rudig'sstore are arranged according to her own quirky aesthetic.

Ratherthan toss a dead mouse she found in the bathroom, she's placed iton a funeral bed she crafted from a sardine can. It restspeacefully among little plastic mice, a glass mouse and a toymonkey. "Now he'll never be alone again," Rudig explains."Never rehydrated either." Rudig climbs the stairs to the second floor, past three roboticfish that serenade her. It was her father's death that took her from life on a number lineto life amid a cluster of oddities.

At 28, Rudig decided she didn't want to work as an accountantanymore. She went to get her second undergraduate degree in thefine arts and discovered her talent for sculpting ceramics. Hoarder's World began when Rudig claimed her husband's first-flooroffice on N. Broadway for the Cardboard Floor Displays of her own work. Dave Rudighas run an indoor paintball field operation in the building for thelast 25 years.

You can see his customers suiting up for theircolorful battles through a door on the first floor of his wife'sshop. When Toni Rudig realized there wasn't enough demand for her potteryand her woven baskets, she started buying and selling vintage itemsthat she arranged in her store like the objects in her father'smessy attic. One day, while her husband took his employees out to ahockey game, Rudig tore down a wall on the second floor of thestructure. Little did he know, she had plans to expand.

Words spray-painted on the stairwell wall, "Return toSender," announce an exhibition her nephew, Anthony Mikkelson, had put up a few months ago in the back-half of the second floor. Mikkelson, who graduated from the Peck School of Arts and whopaints in his spare time, says his aunt encouraged his artisticambitions: "She'd always say follow your will and your dreams, and everything else will take care of itself." Rudig welcomes artists and more to her shop. When art students comelooking for supplies, she asks them about the nature of theirassignments, and she helps them hunt for materials. Wedding parties shop for patina-stained candlesticks and mason-jarvases. Art and antique dealers visit for the bargains they knowRudig will give them.

Twenty and thirtysomethings settling downsearch for historied home décor items that will startconversations. Rudig doesn't always know the story behind the thing she sells, andshe loves it when customers teach her about them. "I'm always learning," she says, because the collectiblesand their stories never stay in the store for more than fourmonths. Here, the old is always new. And Rudig's father's attic is reborn.

Crowds begin to thin by the third floor, a field of furniture thatreveals just how serious Rudig has become about her in-storebusiness and her auctioning. There's a rare first price tag belowthe left butt cheek of a half-mannequin supporting a table top. Rudig and her husband have been auctioneers since graduating froman eight-day program in Minnesota last year. They've downsized thepaintball business to expand Hoarder's World and conduct their ownauctions.

Rudig will make an appearance as an expert appraiser on Wednesday'sepisode of a National Geographic's "America's LostTreasures." "Everybody thinks their things are precious," Rudig says. She tries not to injure people's feelings when they bring her itemsthat aren't worth much. Value is relative. She's sold letters, like those on a theatermarquis, spelling "s-p-i-n-e" - though not in that order- for $1,000. A tchotchke is not a tchotchke is not a tchotchke to all.
