Direct mail is one among many ways that businesses can attract new customers to their companies. Advertising is done in order to get the word out about a business's products and services. If potential buyers have an opportunity to sample a company's wares, there is a good chance that they will buy the items in the future. It's important, as a business owner, to make sure that when a new customer does buy, that the products and services are stellar. That includes having the highest quality goods, exemplary customer service, and always "doing what you say you'll do."

Another name for direct mail is admail. This is a form of advertising that is communicated to potential customers through the post office, FedEx, and UPS. It may be the form of flyers, letters, postcards, catalogs, or samples of the goods. Many times, there are coupons, offers of extremely low prices, or bargain discounts for initial purchases. For example, if a maid service was using this type of advertisement, they might offer one free cleaning with the purchase of further housekeeping services. These types of ads are sent to individuals who fall within a specific target market based on age, income, location, job, and/or past purchases. With the rising cost of postage, many individuals may wonder how advertisers can afford to use this method of getting their messages across. The answer to this question would be "bulk rate." Marketers who follow specific U.S. Post Office guidelines are eligible for greatly reduced postal rates.

Some other types of advertising used today include telemarketing, email ads, inserts in magazines and newspapers, and face-to-face selling. These techniques vary in efficiency and results. In previous times, telemarketing was simply cold calling potential clients or buyers. For example, when a person would answer his or her house phone, AKA the landline, there would be a salesperson on the other end inviting them to subscribe to the local newspaper, buy light bulbs, or purchase a timeshare in the mountains. In the old days, there was no caller ID, so most people answered their phones every time. Eventually, people got caller ID, voicemail, and began to screen their calls. Eventually unidentified solicitors' went largely unanswered and the method lost effectiveness. Marketers have since switched to text message inquiries and offers as well as invitations to buy through email. Inserts in magazines are similar to the ads mailed through direct mail except that the method of delivery is within the pages of reading material. Face-to-face salespersons can be found at the mall, at a party, or at your front door.

Whatever type of advertising a business decides to use to find new customers, the most important thing for company owners to remember is to do what they say they'll do, maintain the highest quality product or service, and treat customers like royalty. This is how they will develop a loyal and trusting following. A successful ad campaign of direct mail, email solicitation, or face-to-face sales will attract customers but it's the well run company that keeps them.
