Travertine tiles are made out of solid natural stone. This means they are the same from surface to surface and you can grind them down as far as necessary without losing the beauty of the tile surface. Travertine tiles have the added benefit of being made of a porous stone, so they grind down quickly and are easy to shape and cut. Travertine tiles come in a variety of colors and vein patterns and are easy to work with even for a novice. Instructions as follows: Firstly, find the areas on your floor or marblewalls where the tiles need to be ground down. Mark the areas which need to be ground down by circling them with a pencil. Secondly, use an orbital sander with variable speeds on a low speed setting with coarse grit sandpaper, under 100 grit, to sand the areas which need to be ground down. Sand the areas until you have achieved your desired plane for the area. Thirdly, use an orbital sander with variable speeds on a low speed setting with medium grit sandpaper, between 100 and 200 grit, to sand the areas which you have just sanded. Sand these areas until you have removed the grit marks left by the coarse grit sandpaper. Fourthly, use an orbital sander with variable speeds on a low speed setting with fine grit sandpaper, above 200 grit, to sand the areas which you have just sanded. Sand these areas until you have removed the grit marks left by the coarse grit sandpaper. Continue to sand with finer grit sandpapers until there are no grit marks on the tile. Fifthly, use tools such like towel or rag to apply sealer to the floor. Allow sealer to dry and reapply until you have achieved the sheen you desire. Tips & Warnings Sealers come with varying sheens. Purchase the type which suits your needs so that you do not make your tiles too shiny or not shiny enough. Use the low speeds on an adjustable speed orbital sander because you will not over-grind the tiles. If you do not have an adjustable speed orbital sander available, you can sand by hand. Another option is to rent an upright floor sander, which will grind down the floor quickly and evenly over large surface areas.
