A Coroner has found that a young midwife's failure to notice alabour was not proceeding normally contributed to the death of ababy at Waikato Hospital. In October 2009, Linda Barlow gave birth by emergency c-section toa boy named Adam at the hospital, after being transferred fromRiver Ridge East Birth Centre along with her midwife, JenniferRowan, because of complications in the delivery. Adam was floppy and unresponsive. He had a faint heartbeat andaggressive attempts were made to resuscitate him, but he waspronounced as a stillbirth by the paediatrician. Doctors were at the same time trying to save the life of Linda, whowas described as being in a "precarious state". She eventually pulled through, and after reading medical notesindicating her son had shown signs of life, such as moving feet andhands, requested a Coroner investigate her son's death. In findings released today, Coroner Gordon Matenga found Adam wasnot a stillborn, as he showed signs of life after being born. Matenga concluded Adam died of intrapartum asphxia, an impairmentof the delivery of oxygen to the brain due to a prolonged labour. He said failures on 23-year-old Rowan's part also contributed tothe baby's death. The Coroner found that upon arriving at Waikato Hospital, Rowan didnot communicate any urgency to the hospital's midwives, despitehaving difficulty finding the foetal heartbeat. He said after Linda arrived at the hospital, there was uncertaintyas to who was responsible for providing midwifery care, which ledto no one taking responsibility for her labour. Matenga said the confusion arose from staff failing to followguidelines. The Coroner said he agreed with evidence from the Barlows' lawyerKate Davenport that Adam died due to Rowan's failure to recognisethat the progress of labour was not normal and to convey urgency toDHB staff. Other factors were Rowan and DHB staff failing to make efforts tospeed up Adam's delivery and not interpreting the CTG trace, whichrecords the foetal heartbeat. He said evidence supplied by Rowan was "self serving" and saidthere were gaps in her documentation.
