Diagnostic imaging centers are health organizations that specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and other medical conditions. Diagnostic imaging refers to an area of health that uses various machines and equipment to locate cancerous cells, tumors and other abnormal findings inside the human body. Radiologists, doctors who use imaging, treat patients of all ages and medical backgrounds. Who Are Radiologists? Physicians with specialized degrees in the research, treatment and prevention of cancer are called radiologists. They have a greater understanding of imaging and cancer due to their job duties and profession. Radiologists obtain their education through clinical research and training. This includes interning at a hospital or research center prior to working as medical doctors. They are typically board certified by the state they practice. Who Are Radiology Technicians? Radiology technicians are assistants to radiologists. They acquire an associate's degree in radiology technology and achieve certification in their state. Technicians also work in a variety of imaging areas, including MRI and sonography. They operate the machinery, make patients feel comfortable and assist radiologists with the procedures. What Imaging Tools and Equipment is Used? The types of equipment used in diagnostic imaging centers vary greatly. New technology and medical equipment is developed all the time. Radiologists and their technicians must keep up with this advancement through continuing education and training. The following diagnostic equipment is used today. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) As one of the most used types of imaging tools, magnetic resonance imaging uses magnetic technology to see inside the body. You generally lie on a table that slowly travels through a closed machine. It takes a series of three-dimensional pictures of your organs and tissues. Although MRI technology is very useful in diagnosing conditions, it can be difficult for some people to experience. It can make them feel claustrophobic or afraid. Computed Tomography (CT) A CT scanner is similar to MRI technology, except that you travel through an open machine, rather than a closed one. CT scans produce images of the body using radiology. Unlike MRI, this testing device combines computer technology with the power of x-rays. Doctor scan examine your heart, lungs and other organs for disease and bleeding. Locating broken bones and damage to your organs is possible as well. Nuclear Scanning Nuclear scanning uses a radioactive substance to see your organs. Doctors inject the substance, known as a tracer, into your body prior to the scanning. However, the dosage of is very small and relatively safe. Radiologists can diagnose dangerous locations in the brain, lungs and other organs. If you have this procedure completed at one of the diagnostic imaging centers, expect it to last up 45 minutes or less. Ultrasound Ultrasound is a very useful diagnostic tool. It uses the power of high frequency waves to produce images on a screen. Doctors use it in obstetrics, examinations of the reproductive system and a numerous other areas of women's health. With ultrasound, diagnostic imaging centers can help locate birth defects, uterine fibroids and tumors. Fibroids and tumors are abnormal growths and developments in the uterus. Mammograms, taking pictures of breast tissue, is another area of ultrasound imaging. Mammograms are diagnostic tests used to find breasts tumors. If you are a woman, this testing can help your doctor locate breast cancer early or before it spreads to nearby tissue. If you experience changes in your body that you cannot explain, consult with your primary doctor. Your doctor may refer you to a diagnostic imaging center to locate the cause of your problem. If the radiologists find anything wrong, further treatment and testing may be required.
