Acquiring a college degree is much more necessary for career success than it was just a couple of generations ago. Without some kind of college training, many opportunities in life will remain forever closed. Though there are many levels of college educations, each of them opens the door to an increasingly wider array of career paths. When you choose to go to college, you often have to choose how much time that you can devote in the long-term to your education. Fortunately, you do not have to be limited to your initial choice. If you can only afford a two-year degree initially, you can always strive for more education later when your circumstances improve. Associate Degree The most basic of all college educations is this two-year degree. It does not exist for many fields. For instance, there is no associate degree in teaching. However, there are many lucrative fields which do permit entry level work with an associate degree. The nursing degree is a two-year degree that actually requires about three years to complete. Like many other degrees, the nursing degree can be enhanced with further education, such as a bachelor degree in the same field. Bachelor Degree It typically takes about four years to achieve a bachelor degree in college. Taking a high concentration of classes each semester and adding summer courses may reduce the time to three years. Sometimes it can take longer than four years. Examples of degrees possible at this level of education include a tourism management degree and a teaching degree. Many fields require newcomers to achieve at least a bachelor degree before it is possible to obtain a position in the field. Master Degree Some fields do not really allow people to practice their trade until they acquire a master’s degree. Lawyers, for instance, generally have to acquire a bachelor degree in some related subject before studying law at this graduate level. Other fields offer enhanced opportunities for those who augment their initial education with a master degree. You can do this with a tourism management degree or a nursing degree. When you acquire a master’s degree in nursing, for example, you can become a nurse manager or a nurse educator. Doctoral Degree This is the pinnacle of education. There is no degree higher than the doctoral degree. People who reach this level of education typically have a Ph. D. This stands for Doctor of Philosophy technically but really means a doctor in any field. Some fields require their aspirants to reach this level of learning in their field before they can even get any experience. Medical doctors reach this tier of education before they can even begin an internship at a hospital. There is a popular saying that college is not for everyone. Actually, there are so many options at the college level that it really is for everyone. Financial aid opens doors to people from all economic backgrounds. If a post secondary education is your dream there is nothing holding you back from pursuing it.
