Cases of credit fraud continue to increase as people become fond of using credit cards as a way to purchase services or goods rather than paying with cash. Credit card fraud occurs when criminals get access to your credit card either by stealing your wallet or hacking into your online accounts. It is very important for you to be very vigilant in terms of safeguarding your credit card. You don’t want to become the next victim of credit scams with lost credit cards because it will mean serious trouble for you in the long run. You must know how to spot credit card fraud in order to protect yourself against fraud. How to identify if your card is being used for fraud
- Know what identity theft is – This is most common type of fraud associated with a lost credit card. It happens when a thief gains access to your credit card information, messing up not only your credit standing but your entire financial life. Once a person has successfully taken over your identity, they’ll use your information to make large purchases or commit crimes under your name.
- Watch out for phishing emails – Phishing is an online trick scammers use to get your information from you. Scam artists will email you pretending to be from a well-known site like Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn and ask you to enter your information to either sign up or log in. Scammers will usually have a very good copy of the emails those companies send so they can fool you. Another type of phishing is when they ask you to directly reply to their e-mails with your complete user name or password, and afterwards, they’ll hack into your account to look for personal information.
- Undelivered online purchases – This scam occurs in online shopping transactions. After getting charged, your items will not be delivered, and since you already paid for the product and the shipping, you have become a victim of fraud. In this case, be cautious when shopping online and only shop from well-established sites or shops that have been in the online industry for several years. Do not order from unknown shops or those that sell their products at super low prices. They may just be scammers out to take your money.
- Missing wallets or credit cards – Self-serve gas stations or kiosks are two of the most common places where thieves attempt to steal credit cards. Keep in mind that a missing wallet, if not found, is as good as stolen and what you need to do is to immediately get in touch with your credit card provider.
- Unusual credit activity – Those who have lost their credit cards have to carefully monitor their credit and watch out for any suspicious activities.
