Apply these tips to communicate with your child and build strong connections. Drill into your child's head from the time they are old enough to understand the dangers of talking to strangers. These days you do not know who you can trust to be around your child. It is even harder for a child to make those decisions. Be sure to teach your child how to act when approached by strangers. It helps your kids deal with bullying by sharing your own experiences. Find out what policies are in place at school and make sure your children understand who is available to help during the school day. Children love praise; give it to them when they exhibit good behavior. Kids want lots of attention. If they don't receive attention for good behavior, they may turn to bad behavior to get it. It is easy to only notice the bad things a child does when you are a parent. It is a mistake to only pay attention to those things, though. Reward your child when they do well. Although you do need to spend lots of time with the kids, you also need to make time for yourself. This helps you to maintain your strength as an individual, which will make you a better parent. Infants and toddlers do not need to drink any kind of soda. Only give your child drinks that offer nutrients and vitamins. Milk, water and juices are great examples of drinks that are good to offer your child. Stay with the same routine at night to get your child ready for bed. Establishing a bedtime routine allows your child to get his mind ready to go to bed and get to sleep. Once he brushes his teeth, puts on his pajamas and then hears a bedtime story, he will know that sleeping will follow. When your child understands what comes next, he is less resistant. Getting angry doesn't help most parents become better disciplinarians. Eventually children will return anger if their parents demonstrate it to them. Getting angry in front of a child can damage their self-concept and teach poor coping skills. Particular care should be given for controlling anger in situations where a child's mistake was unintentional. On the occasions when calming your baby is elusive, apply lavender oil to your neck and cuddle the baby. Lavender oil has been proven to soothe nerves, so the smell should help settle your child quickly. Lavender oil can also be used to help a child fall to sleep when nap time arrives because the oil is very calming. Before administering medicine to your child, it may be helpful to mix each dose in something sweet. You can stir a little sugar in with the medicine, or use some orange juice. A handy hint for applying eye drops is to place the drop on your child's eyelid while their eyes are closed. Then, when the eye is opened, the eye drops will be right there and fall straight in. Teaching your children some rudimentary cooking skills means that as adults they can feed themselves rather than ordering delivery or getting take out. Both boys and girls will enjoy learning how to cook and help with meal preparations. This is also a great family activity that enhances family bonds.
