You know Gurgaon as a swanky, cosmopolitan city located at the South of the capital of India. Gurgaon, with high rise buildings, wide roads, flyovers, magnificent malls and multinational companies, has transformed into a developed city with one of the highest levels of per capita income in the country. This neighbour of Delhi is now considered as one of the most dynamic cities of India, in fact in few cases preferred over even Delhi. Gurgaon is now home to more than one and a half million people most of them are from service class. The city is writing a new economic story every day with numerous companies and businesses. But if we go back in time around one and a half decade back, Gurgaon was only a small town then. A sleepy small town on the out skirts of Delhi with broken roads, small houses, congested lanes and care free people. Thus came the moment of liberalization and Government opened up many sectors. New companies started coming to India. Suddenly India was a huge market ready to be catered by multinational companies. With all these companies eager to open their offices in the country, the demand for business centers in India surged. Every company which was setting up its operations in India wanted an office in one of the metros. Delhi and Mumbai were their preferred choice to set base. This sudden increase of demand for office space in Delhi & Mumbai fuelled the prices which were already ridiculously high. Suddenly the prices were touching the sky in the already crowded commercial space market in Delhi. Gurgaon got the most benefit from this increase in demand. Its proximity with Delhi and specially Delhi international airport made Gurgaon the ideal destination for setting up business offices. Land was cheap in Gurgaon at that time. In comparison to Delhi, the prices were nothing. The town had acres of barren land which was not that much of agricultural use. These characteristics made Gurgaon an Ideal recipe for real estate boom, specifically commercial. Developers rallied to Gurgaon to exploit the town’s offerings. Many residential and commercial projects were launched. New buildings started taking shapes. New societies came into existence. Many companies opened their business centers in Gurgaon and within no time the small town transformed into a big city, a powerful hub for the service economy. The city became home to some of the biggest organizations. Delhi’s loss became Gurgaon’s gain and with a powerful middle class population, Gurgaon became the millenium city of India.
