Indians are no more the welled frog they used to be till a few decades back. They have now become a global community with a presence in most parts of the world, be it US, UK, Canada, South Africa or Australia. Over the years, there was been a huge out flux in terms of Indians moving out and making other countries their home and winning countless native hearts in the process by their business acumen and a cultural expanse which makes others envy us Indians. A close knit and societal entity we being, this migration also sees a lot of us missing out on our family interactions. That 25th anniversary celebration of our parents last year is still so vivid in our hearts and minds, the celebratory dinner we had when my little sister stopped being little anymore and got hitched to the love of her life or that round of beers I and my gang of friends shared when Raghu, got through IIM- Ahmedabad, the most coveted business school of the country. Things change yet some things remain the same and one of those is our yearning for the close knit group of family and friends which overtime has become our sense of very being; the reason why we do what we do. Countless years passed by when I was working my way up in an advertising agency in Adelaide. The perks were good, the remuneration was high and there was a sense of well being with my job drawing out my creative side to the maximum. What I did not have was the recognition such a job would have provided in India along with the love and comfort of the same. It had remained the same since 2005 when I came here and would have remained the same until a freak phenomenon would take India by storm. E-Commerce : Yes, you heard it right. It was e-commerce which bought me closer to my friends and family once again. No longer did I have to wait for a trip to India to say sorry for my not being with my mom and dad for their anniversary neither did I have to say sorry to my group of friends when one of them became a proud father. I could just log on to a portal and place gifting orders for my friends and family. Be it cakes and flowers delivery or just a box of chocolates or a Spider Man costume for my nephew, everything could be placed online for them. It is not that the advent of E-Commerce was something new but most of the commerce used to happen from tech-friendly countries like US, UK, Australia etc. which would when cater for their shipping costs and it would thus be a deterrent for guys like us. A box of chocolates from Australia to my home town, Mumbai would cost me INR 3000/- while now a similar order placed on an Indian E-Commerce site would cost me not more than INR 500/-. Flower delivery in Mumbai was a pain for me as my sister is really fond of roses as gifts and I could not do that earlier; now it is a different story for I place an order with many an online florist out there and she gets a wonderful bunch in her hands in a mere 4 hours from placing the order. If anything could have been divine intervention, it had to be this!
