Training a dog can be an exciting, yet challenging chore. But when you have a herd dog, it can be a little more challenging than you think. It is best if the animals are a bit younger, or the more calm among the herd also. Older animals that have not really been around dogs before can be quite challenging to a dog that is just learning. Another good tip, is to train the dog and the herd in a pen that is round. This is great, because the stock or dog cannot get "cornered". Small, open pastures are also great, if you can have most control and if you have another "mature" dog on the premises. This is beneficial because the pup or new dog can watch the ropes of everything and hopefully catch on. It's in their gene, most will get it in no time. Always praise a dog that has done the job right. He will know that you are thanking him for doing a great job. Always remember that each and every dog will handle and mature differently from others. Pups and new dog's will be more apt to wanting to do the work again, if you make the work fun. Never beat your dog or raise your voice really loud to him, or he will be reluctant to want to go back again tomorrow. If the dog shows that he doesn't want to go back at it, or if he simply shows fear, you can always come back to it in a few weeks.
