Cleveland CycleWerks, an Ohio-based manufacturer of small bobberand café racer style motorcycles powered by 229ccsingle-cylinder engines, is partnering with Darkside Scientific to offer the first motorcycles with electroluminescent paint.Darkside Scientific has a patent-pending coating process that willilluminate when energized by an electrical current. Thecompany"s patent-pending coating technology, LumilorElectroluminescent Paint, is applicable to almost any surface andis claimed to light up with the ease of flicking a switch.According to Darkside Scientific PR, Cleveland CycleWerks will be offering the electroluminescent paint as a custom optionon their motorcycles in the near future. Until then, Darkside Scientific is offering an opportunity to ownthe very first motorcycle painted with LumiLor, a ClevelandCycleWerks Heist model, for a $15,000 donation to its indiegogo funding campaign. The new collaboration, called Sith CycleWerks,will help the start-up company further develop and promote theelectroluminescent technology.
The campaign targets companies andcorporations looking for a unique way to brand their product likepainting their logo on the Sith CycleWerks Heist. DarksideScientific said it will donate $2500 of the $15,000 price tag tothe Wounded Warriors Project. The LumiLor electroluminescent coating system is used with simpledriver electronics to light up any surface. It is based on"aqueous-based polymer technologies" to achieve theeffect and requires no special tools or expensive equipment toapply.
Darkside Scientific claims it can be "custom-animatedto flash in sequenced, strobed, and sound activated modes"and says it can be applied to metal, wood, fiberglass and plastics.The company is touting its ability to be applied to a variety ofshapes and compound curves as well, a useful fact for itsapplication on motorcycles. LumiLor is claimed to be energyefficient, powered by a touch of electrical current, and is safeand cool to the touch. Darkside Scientific is currently looking for partners in thearchitectural, automotive, consumer products and industrial marketsto help manufacture, distribute and apply LumiLor. They are seekingto raise $250,000 with their indiegogo campaign to help"evolve from a well-equipped garage to a state-of-the-art ELCoatings Lap to advance R&D on the technology." A motorcycle that lights up at night at the switch of a button?Every day is seems like reality creeps ever closer toscience-fiction.
But if it can help a motorcyclist"svisibility at night without sacrificing the quality of a custompaint job, it"s got potential. Motorcyclists lighting uptheir bikes with LEDs is already a hot fad.
